The double nickel

I reckon I better start a build thread so I'll have a place to ask all my questions. This was a Craigslist find a few months ago. I bought a 55 when I was a kid and have been wanting another one ever since. Shoutout to joedoh for the info I've received so far. Lot's of inspiration from the build threads on here.

To summarize my previous thread, I bought a kit from Matts Classic Bowtie that included Shockwaves and a 4 link set up. After installing the front shocks it was clear the previous owner installed the camaro clip higher on the frame in order to lower the truck. This caused the Ridetech stuff not to fit.
I decided to take it on the chin and redo the front clip.

Nice Job on the reclip! I'll bet it set pretty low the first time. I love your Truck always had a soft spot for the TF trucks.

Got the lq9 in last week. I'm super stoked. I haven't decided if I want to keep it stock or make it go gee bloopa gee bloopa yet .

I bought it sight unseen so kind of fitting of the column and steering wheel that came in the truck...

Came with pedal and stand alone harness. Every wire was labeled.

Subscribed. What are your plans for it?

59chev 05-21-2017 08:12 PM

Did you drive it much before you reclipped it? Did it seem too low with the stock camaro springs in it? I am aiming for a similar stance at ride height and I'm curious if I can accomplish that with cut springs or if I will need to bag mine. Did you go with the shockwaves because you wanted to lower it more or was it to have the option of raising it up from the previous ride height?

Thanks

It would rub the tires when i turned. I got into a situation in traffic where i needed to make a tight turn and couldn't. The rear was a bigger problem. Every time i hit a bump it would bottom out. I went with Ridetech because i wanted the adjustability but mainly because i wanted a good ride and heard that regular bags didn't have that good of a ride. I guess I'm about to find out if it was worth it. That was one of the things I feared because I couldn't find a lot of reviews on the shockwaves.

I got these for dirt cheap last week. Does anyone know what adapters i need in order to make them fit my current wheels?

Here are the wheels I have

Re: The double nickel

rally caps wont fit wheels with nubs. rally caps mount inside the lug recess, nub wheels need caps that mount outside. they make 10.5" poverty caps for nub wheels, not that look like those but some nice ones. or you can buy 15" smoothie wheels from wheel vintiques and the poverty rally caps will fit them.

the two likely reasons why the rear wont lift high enough on your airbar is probably 1. shocks and 2. setting it up at ride height. for shocks, I like usuing new JK jeep take offs, they have like 9" or so of travel, the airlift kit shocks only have 4.5. for the ride height, sleeve bags will lift like 7.5" but if you arent setting the bag up to squish completely where its aired out, you will waste lift and it will ride poorly.

bluetrim 06-07-2017 05:08 PM

Re: The double nickel

so smoothies from wheel vintiques or rallys are the only option?

joedoh 06-07-2017 05:24 PM

Re: The double nickel

they are the only wheels those caps fit, yes. no one makes an adapter to put them on nub wheels.

full disclosure they will also fit wheel vintiques artillery

While this may be technically true there may well be a way to do it if you're handy with a drill and hammer. Check out these hubcap clips on your wheels. The "nubs" would show -which you may not like - but you won't know until you test fit them. -Dan

As you can se below, there are ways to mount these even on rims for which they were never made. At $2 each it's not like it's gonna cost you much to give it a try.

Cool truck! Are you going to use a ride height controller or go from air pressure?

Re: The double nickel

"i wanted a good ride and heard that regular bags didn't have that good of a ride" Actually standard bags will ride just as good as factory suspension if set up correctly and the proper size bag is used. I run 8" bags on my truck (1500 chassis) an if you didn't know I was on air ride you you couldn't tell it by ride quality. The key is proper set up, I have seen and ridden in a lot of hack jobs that rode like crap. Ride teck is a good system and easy to get a good ride but it is costly.

Having trouble mounting the frame mount booster and m/c. Tranny crossmember is in the way. Anyone have pics of a frame mount booster with a 4l60? Preferably with the exhaust mounted but that may be asking too much.....

Re: The double nickel

you have to delete the "s" and the ampersand "&" and anything that comes after it.

usually this is because people set up their accounts for monetization, which adds featured content to the sidebar and at the end of the video. for some reason the forum software only works with the pure link, no "&..."

Thanks Joe. Anyone know who currently sells these center caps? I think they may fit my 10 1/8" wheels.

those are 1964 impala dog dish/poverty caps, and yes they do fit your wheel. ask me how I know.

no one sells them new that I am aware of. I have been lucky enough to find a couple sets here and there. on my 65 I ran steel wheels and the same hubcap from 65-67 buicks, looked the same but had a buick emblem in the center. no one noticed. might be a way to come across a set.

Thanks! I found this sight and assumed they were off 64 El Camino's.
http://www.rickblack.org/ElCamino/hubcaps.html

I found 1 on ebay listed as off a bel air.

This adventure is like putting together a large puzzle! Lot's of false leads getting me going down the wrong path.

joedoh 08-13-2017 10:55 PM

Re: The double nickel

on that first site, "full size" means full size car, impala/biscayne/bel air, the differences between them mostly in the roof and number of doors. elcamino was a full size till 62 then went to the "mid size" like the chevelle and malibu in 63.

there are a lot on ebay, but some more reasonable than others. I told my brother I needed two more so he found a pair at a wheel shop and sent them to me, they are 61-62 style. so I guess I will run the 64s on one side and the 62s on the other haha

Re: The double nickel

Installed new windows and felt. The felt on each side of the glass gave me a lot of trouble even after watching a few videos on how to trim the tabs down. I hacked the new ones I bought with the dremel so I'll have to buy another set and take it slow this time.

To say I'm learning a lot about suspension set up is an understatement. The rear shockwaves have too much angle to them so I'm not getting enough lift. I'm going to mount them a bit more vertical. So many variables in play but I'll keep at it.

TMI seat from LMC. I had looked past this seat in their catalog for years and never thought much of them, but it was well worth the coin once it got here.

Looking and sounding good. It's a great feeling to hear a transplant motor run and sound good.
I have an LQ4 and am contemplating a mild cam for a cool chop to the idle. Maybe a Stage II truck cam.

Great looking truck, have a question? What's the backspaceing on your front rims and do you have a rubbing issue. Thanks
