Steering box removal
 

Hi all. I have a 51. How does the column come off the steering sector? I can usually figure stuff out but I'm stumped. Thanks. Jim

The whole thing comes out as one. You leave the column on it, remove the steering wheel, bracket under the dash, drag link from the pitman arm and unbolt the box from the frame and pull the column out of the firewall with the box.

Its one piece, or at least my 54 is/was. I wasn't going to use it anyway (it was worn out and in terrible shape) so my little buddy mr sawzall helped me out.

The way MartinSr said to do it is the right way. You may want the front end of the truck raised up pretty good for clearance though.

Unless it is a worn out junk box I wouldn't take it apart or cut the column and shaft to get it out. The lazy guys cut the shaft and ruin the box for anyone else who might need it. I've even seen a few rolling chassis for sale with the column cut off because the guy who took it apart was too lazy to do it right.

YEP, WORD!

Just do it right, it's simply "different" work than doing it wrong. SOOOOOO often doing something wrong to save time saves NOTHING, you are just doing it different that's all.

Just remove it in one piece like you are suppose to and it's really pretty easy, it just seems odd.
