5 k. i still need to finish the outriggers, before i lift to much, i have to date had around 1000 lbs on it.

This is my first post to the threads, but I'm not new to chevy trucks. In fact my Dad taught me how to drive in a 1964 C30 flatbed he converted into his plumbing truck. When we moved to the Oregon coast in 2001, we did so using our '62 c-30 flatbed. 292 straight 6 and four on the floor. Max spped was 65 (Well not safely. the motor was whining at 65) Let just call it 50 mph cruising. Let's face it, Granny doesn't get much use. I was luck enough to find this easy fixer 65 C-20 Stepside converted to a utility bed. She was born at the Freemont assembly plant in the San Francisco Bay area and grew up as a work truck for a man and then his son. I purchased her off Craig's list from the third owner which makes me owner # 4. The original 327 was replaced in 2006 with a used 350 from a 79 k2500. The three on the Tree, is taking a little getting used to, but I'm managing. The mosy luck part is that someone tried to paint her with standard spray paint and although it sucks, It save her from alot of rust. She still has a couple of small holes in the fender and door bottoms, but the sills an floor pan are almost rust free. they may have painted it wrong but at least they painted her.





As far as I have researched, ULITCO aka Utility body of Oakland no longer exists, or may have been bought up. The corporate liscense is inactive and no answer from the Googled phone number.Apparently, the boxes were attached to the existing bed after removal of the fenders. i don't know if the headache rack was added then or later. i just got her the other day and the rain has prevented me from pulling the plywood from the bed to see what's left of the original wood bed.

That does look to be in real good condition. Especially considering it was a work truck. I wonder if those boxes were installed when the truck was brand new?

I like how they added these to the existing box by just removing the fenders and bolting these on. I suppose there was some other support added as well.

I couldn't get the picture to copy in the quote on post #26, but this truck should be a GMC 6500. It is either a '64 or '65 model (both models were exactly the same on the exterior). The 6500's are pretty rare. I drove a '62 GMC 6500 with a 478 V-6 back in the 70's. They are great trucks.

Maybe this is the truck you drove;) Check out that big 22 or 23,000lb Eaton rear axle. Also note the bumper design used on extra heavy duty models. A GMC 6500 is in a completely different weight range than a Chevy C 60, it would be closer to a Chevy C 80. Most Chevy and GMC trucks built with this cab design were in the lighter GVW ranges, extra heavy duty versions of these trucks ( 33,000 GVW) had much lower production numbers.

Here's some pics of our 64 C30 in action. That's my son driving. Bought this truck in Nebraska from another member of this site. Truck has 40,000 plus miles on it. Nice picture, thanks. Pictures of 6500's are rare. I believe my '62 had a GVW of 32,000, having 9 Fronts and 23 Rears. My truck also had the Heavy Front Bumper, but I can't tell if it is the same as in the picture or not. I actually took a couple of shots of the truck back in the 70's. I have them in storage. I'll try to dig them out one day.

60-66, nice '64 C-30. I had one just like it, although mine didn't dump. One of the best trucks I ever had.

Interesting truck, but the year is wrong. Probably a '62 that was bought and Titled in '61. Looks real clean and well kept.

Back when VIN's where in thier infancy,engine block numbers were used as well to identify vehicles. My 65 came with a "Protecto Plate" with a number representing the 1965 model year and sales codes. But the Listed VIN on the title. uses the assembly plant serial number with a 1964 VIN code pattern with the same assembly line number.

Here is my Work Truck, this 1965 GMC Rescue Squad was in service in Manville NJ up to 2004 with its first owner, Manville First Aid & Rescue Squad.

Whomever designed that truck, sure had more than utility in mind. It must have looked "Space Age" at the time. Or maybe the cabin of a "Chris Craft"
