They can look overwhelming that first time. Just go slow and mark all wires as you disconnect them. Then the rest is a normal unbolt the engine and pull it out. Like you I prefer doing this on the older trucks with less wires, but not really that bad on these newer "old" trucks.

What I do is get some of those paper tags and tie them on to each connection. Some parts of the harness fall right in to place and other parts should be marked to save confusion later on. Felt markers work good. The ink in pens tends to run if it gets wet. Five years ago I R&R'ed the 350 in my K1500 by myself at the age of 60. If you mark everything and start early in the morning you should be able to have the engine out by lunchtime. I had my truck up on Rhino ramps and jackstands to give me working room and I didn't even have to remove the hood.

i got it about read to pull ! the miserable part of this job is finding a good motor -most of them /have more miles than mine ! i always treated my motor with care -oil changed every 2 - 3000 thousand miles let it warm up on cold mornings ?? when it died -i was going down the highway & died -sounds like camshaft broke ?

Were the intake manifold gaskets ever changed. They were/have been a know issue that would normally leak coolant into oil and could cause issue?

Re: 98 2500 engine removal ??

changed intake gaskets about 20,000 miles ago-oil was dumped & no water in there -also no extra parts in oil ! guess ill see what happened -when motor gets out ?? i thought maybe engine would last till 250,000 ? i think these yr motors about worn out at 250,00 miles ? some of my friends say the vorteks thanks mike will do 300,000 miles ??

I got rid of my 96 with 200 something on it. The guy that has it now (since 2006) has about 375K on it. Still running strong. Like you I am curious to what you find.
