Rear coilovers on a '69 c10 lwb!

Can I run coil-over shocks instead of coils and regular shocks?

I want to keep the trailing arms and track bar and ditch the coils.

What weight capacity and length would I need?

Has anyone done this?

Thanx in advance
Dano

There is really no reason you can't...but you had better reinforce the shock mounting points, or better yet reengineer something stronger. The stock mounts were never designed to support the weight of the truck.

Thanx Longhair.
I never thought about the mount points. I'll have to check out some sites to see how it's done on other vehicles.

If you are going to add the coil-over shocks anyway, why the need to do away with the coil springs? I guess what I ask is other than added weight (20 - 25 lbs) what does it hurt to leave them under there?

I only ask out of curiosity and because I have absolutely NO experience with coil overs.

Well.....I guess I can tell you guys. I want to alter my wheelbase....like 12 inches forward....w/o cutting the frame. This would put the rear axle right under the "frame hump". Just wanted to experiment with a LWB frame I have, since I can't seem to sell it.
Thanx Lo and Wild

The coil spring used on the coilovers takes the place of the stock coil spring. You don't want the two springs. The two springs would have different spring rates and it would be a very interesting ride.

i've seen coil spring rear ends with a coil-over shocks used as a "helper" springs and it seemed to work without any issues ... how would this be any different?

I hear what your saying, and agree. I think thoough that you'd want the coil spring to not be touching though unless its at load, like the helper leaf on some of our trucks. I think he's thinking having both springs touching permanently at the same time, which would be a super stiff ride w/ that many springs going on w/ no load.

I'm not sure how the helper coilover spring works as I've never seen them. I would imagine though that it works as leftcoast66 said. It doesn't support any load until there is a heavy load in the rear. I would also imagine it has a really high spring rate, which would make it a very stiff ride.

i know im reviving a dead thread but when i got my 72 c10 it had the coil over shock helper shocks or whatever there called besides the fact the shocks where 15+ years old the ride wasnt super stiff i actualy think it was nicer then how it rides now with just regular shocks now it rides like a water bed not fun when hitting rail road tracks or bumps glad i found this thread though ive been wanting to convert to coil overs without going with a 4 link setup like my friend did and loosing most my bed

I put them on my 71 and the ride is so much better than coils with even a good shock. I think I have 220lbs on the right and 200lbs on the left.

Did you buy them before they quite making it? I called and they stoped about a year ago.;)

I cobbled up my parts from used racing stuff my buddy had off his late model.
