Starting a Registry for BB trucks!
I am in the process of picking up another big block 67-72 truck. According to my truck books only about 4-8% of trucks each year were big blocks. So I got to wondering how many of those were 1/2 ton versus 3/4 ton, short bed vs. longbed, etc.. I was also curious as to how many still exist, and what other options they had.
To answer these questions I decided I would like to start a registry. If anyone would like to contribute information on their ride I will add it to the list. You can post the information here or PM me and I will keep the VIN private (you can block out the last two or three digits of the VIN if you want also). Below is a list of the things I will need in order to add your vehicle to the registry. We may add more requests if anyone thinks of more important questions to ask; but the SPID and a brief description on current status should answer most questions. This Registry is open to all Suburbans as well! To add to registry send: 1. Picture of the SPID. 2. Picture of vehicle and or door VIN plate (Optional) 3. Description if the vehicle, still alive, customized, bieng parted, or already dead and gone. As I collect the data I will put it all into a log book, and after a while we should start bieng able to answer questions about these trucks that many of us may have. |

Re: Starting a Registry for BB trucks!
Thanks for the addition Muleman! So far we only have 6 trucks documented but the ones we have dont look like they were hurting for options. So far big block trucks average 19.8 options. The more trucks we get the more questions we can asnwer for enthusiasts down the road; and the more accurate our answers will be!

Re: Starting a Registry for BB trucks!
It would be physically a larger pumpkin and the bottom bolts on cover would not be level to each other like a 12 bolt.... or you could post a pic!;)

My 69. I am the 3rd owner. No cargo light or headliner CST. Even the cst sidemarkers don't have light provisions.
I also have glovebox doors, but can't document where the trucks are anymore... |
Re: Starting a Registry for BB trucks!
Anyone noticing that all the trucks posted so far with exception of the Canada truck, were built in St. Louis (S), Fremont (Z) or Baltimore (B). How many Lakewood (A) trucks are out there besides mine? I will get an up-to-date photo of everything and add it soon so that it can be added to the registery. Cool thread.

Second 2, i don't know if they are still "alive" Not sure what option "O" is... |

Re: Starting a Registry for BB trucks!
So far it looks like big block trucks and suburbans were fairly well optioned. The average truck so far has about 18 options on its SPID. The vehicle that has the most options so far is a 3/4 ton Chevy longbed with 25. The vehicle with the fewest options so far is also a 3/4 ton Chevy longbed with 12 options.
So far there are some options that seem to be on most of the SPIDS given so far. There are quite a few SPIDS that have some very unique options. I will give some stats on certain options next time I update. Also I am noticing that there are different options codes for the engines within the same year. Does anyone know why there is a difference in the codes? 1969: 4L47AA 4L47AB 1972: 1L4710 1L4720 Also does anyone know why some trucks use 3 digit codes while others use 6 digit codes? |
Re: Starting a Registry for BB trucks!
This is cool info, I have a BB 70 c30 that has a long list. I will see if I can find a picture.

Re: Starting a Registry for BB trucks!
Have a 1972 1/2Ton Suburban. OEM was 402, 366 now but have a 72 402 from a GMC C20 in the wings to put it back to OEM. Plan to restore. Will be DRIVER by summer 2011. I'll see if I can get the VIN from the GMC donor as it will get crushed at some point.
