Question for the Paint Pros
 

Have any of you used this product without the clear coat. (Pictured below)
I used the color coat on my glove box door without the clear as it matched interior so well. I did not want an over glossed finish.
I went to the paint store today and the counterman said it was a mistake not to clear coat as the color coat will not hold up over time and will crack and flake.
Is that the case, and if so, will the satin be the correct shine so as not to be too glossy and match the very good condition original interior paint on the dash.
I want to color paint the AC vent mount and Steering Column as well since the glove box turned out so well.

If it's too glossy, you can knock it down with .0000 steel wool.

He is correct, it won't hold up all that well. Do a test panel with the clear over the color and see how it matches up.

It’s meant for a clear coat and will not hold up without it.
Coat it with a satin finish

Shoot. Was hoping counterman was just being over cautious on interior protection.
That paint is a few months old. I take it I'll need to sand off and start over given the clear is meant to go on right away. Live and learn as they say.

Check with the counter man.
I’m guessing a very slight sand with 600 and clear but verify that.

No you don’t need to strip it. Scuff it will gray scotch bright put one more coat of base on and clear it. Clear needs to be on within 24 hrs of base coat application.

I'd say being inside that part wont get the UV light as a outside panel will it will last for a while before failing. but to do it and forget it when you do the a/c vents and column scuff it shoot it again and then put the clear on. If you decide to do it with a spray gun you can buy a flatting agent for clear or clear already flattened. If not the spray can satin may work well too. either way you go I think the inside of your truck is really looking great. Good Job!! Jim

Thanks everyone for comments. The tips really helped. My plan is as follows. Remove the vent mounts. Thankfully they are metal so no plastic issues with the paint. Scuff the door, vents, and column with 600. Color spry, then clear. I think it will turn out well and be the best for long tern stability. Impact02, that extra color coat tip was helpful. I would not have done that but make sense and will save some effort.
