Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
any more pics of the engine?
any numbers on the heads? 317, 243 ? What year is the block or engine supposed to be out of? |
Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
No more pics.Owner does not know,
already restored when he bought it. |
Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
Does motor mount location give any info?

Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
It is very hard to tell you anything with those covers over it. 2004.5 and newer have floating pistons and better rods. 2007 started switching over to the larger square port heads vs. the cathedral ports.
Gen3 engines with the weaker rods are still pretty reliable in the 700hp range, so unless you are trying to push it beyond that I wouldn't worry about it. Keep in mind a bone stock LQ4 which is the lowest compression version of a 6.0 still makes around 400hp with no accessories like most of our engines are dynoed. |
Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
Looks like an earlier motor by the mechanically operated throttle body, but has aluminum heads so 2001 and newer. Appears to be some good aftermarket spark plug wires but some power robbing short headers. Can't see much else with all that heat trapping plastic on top of the engine.

Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
Is it an aluminum block?
|
Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
Keep in mind many trucks still had cable driven throttle bodies during the transition year (2004), and vans used them for years after.
Those headers are still an upgrade over the stock exhaust manifolds. |
Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
The only true way to tell would be to pull the VIN off the block and check it, and that's only useful if the motor was never apart. What is your concern/question about the motor?

Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
I'm fairly certain it's a 3 bolt drive by cable which says it's a gen 3 engine. That throttle body won't narrow down the year though as they are commonly swapped out by guys that don't want to deal with the extra wiring.

Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
I'm going to guess by the 5 pin MAF, the drive by cable TB and aluminum heads, that it's a 2001-2002 engine
Those pretty engine covers can be slapped on anything The shorty headers are nothing special, they're just like the stock manifolds |
Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
this is a helpful video made by Summit which will definitely help you. You cannot go by heads for certain (unless you REALLY trust the guy and every owner before him) as they are swapped like underwear.

Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
He said the heads has a casting #862 and now he thinks it may be a 5.3

Re: Can you tell what generation LS this is?
Can't go by heads. Most people have no clue what's under their hood. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people talk about their Ls1's only for them to pop the hood and I'm looking at a truck manifold. Lol.
