Guy trades 64 Chevy for used Camry at work.

I work at a Toyota dealership. Today a guy came in with a super clean 64 short bed stepside with big back glass and traded it for a used Toyota Camry. He said he had owned the truck for 36 years and wanted a car to drive to the beach. I would have bought the car and given him $5000 to boot. This was a show quality truck that had never been driven in the rain. I looked it over and not only couldn't find one spec of rust, I couldn't find any dirt or grease anywhere including the underside. I wanted to ask what the price was going to be on it but the owner said it's not for sale, he is keeping it.
I have some crappy pictures on my phone and as soon as I figure out how I will post them.

Here's a picture. I will try to post some more later but since I switched to Windows 10 Photo-bucket doesn't work worth a crap.
ETA, I believe what looks like a small dent in the front fender is just a reflection, I couldn't find any dents when I looked it over. It has a fresh built 350 and four speed trans.

All I can say is WOW! I sure hope he got a super nice low mileage . . . . no, wait!!!! What am I saying? He's OUT OF HIS MIND!

One of the salesman told me the car had around 85,000 miles. I tried to talk the guy out of trading it at risk of losing my job. They brought the contract outside to the truck for him to sign. The wood in the back is beautiful, he said he made it from scratch not from a kit. The interior looks as awesome as the outside.

who let this guy out by himself? just goes to show you , car salesmen have no sense of shame. Everyone in the sales office probably had a party over this trade

That is a very strange trade indeed. There has to be more to that guys story. Maybe he has a whole stash of classics and that's the one that had to go to get something more practical.

Ya, could be. Or maybe he got it easy and gave it away easy. Might not have meant much to him.

For a boring as hell, common as dirt Camry with 85,000 miles? Unbeleivable.

Woulda thought he would have traded it for something like a Camaro.

Re: Guy trades 64 Chevy for used Camry at work.

I may have a chance to buy it as the boss man was partners with the owner of the local Chevy dealership until they had a falling out and now he is not fond of Chevys. The service manager was telling me he thinks he will end up selling it but I'm not holding my breath. He knows I'm interested in it and was teasing me today by saying he may sell it for ridiculously low price. Maybe he was wanting to see if I would make a real offer?

I have a hard time believing it didn't mean much to him if he had it 36 years. Possible I guess, but he may also have something else going on in life that caused him to need to trade, not necessarily want to. Who knows...

I'm with you on that possibility. Its fairly obvious this truck meant an awful lot to this guy. If he's happy with the deal he made I'm happy for him...

The Camry is probably worth $15K - $20K, which is about all that truck is worth. Financially it wasn't bad trade, so not sure I understand the controversy here.

Why do you think I would make up such a story? I have been here for a while and never made any out of the way statements. I would appreciate it if you just keep your derogatory comments to yourself from now on.

Maybe it was a divorce and this was the alternative to losing it to his soon to be X.

Re: Guy trades 64 Chevy for used Camry at work.

The guy told me he was just getting old (64) and wanted something easier to drive. It was obvious that this truck wasn't his every day driver though. The truck looks like it had been sitting in a closed in garage for the last 3o something years.

You shouldn't go around calling people you don't know liars.
I will gladly give you the phone # to the dealership where I work if you would like to check out the story.
