Rear gas tank question
 

I am looking to mount a rear tank in my 68 SWB. The main issue I want to avoid is seeing the tank hanging down below the rear bumper when looking at the truck from the rear.
Does anyone know what I should go with to avoid the eye sore?

I used the Classic Industries Rear Tank, 21 Gallon.

Here is a pic of the tank installed prior to the license plate being attached. I think it is pretty well hidden.

You can see it a little bit from the side, but it is not as big as one would think.

And, yes, I have fixed the bent rear bumper......

I just finished this project on my 71. I used the Tanks, Inc. universal 16 gallon tank. (I know, only 16 gallon! It'll get me around town and through a burnout or two!) The advantage to this tank is, that it's only 7 or 8" deep! It fit between the frame rails with a little help from my 4.5" angle grinder. I "clearanced" the frame rails about a 1/4" on each side, because the tank is exactly the width of the frame rails. I used the straps that came with the tank and I'm in the middle of fitting the filler neck this week. I like this tank's option to use the pickup or use an in-tank pump setup if you want to go EFI later. The Sender that comes with it is a 0-90ohm, so it works with the factory gauge.
I'll try to remember to post a pic later of it with the bed on. You can't see it at all from the back or sides under the truck.

I'll highly recommend a NoLimit tank. I bought a Kustom Tanks unit several years ago. A couple months ago when I removed it, it had a broken baffle. I took it to Rob at NoLimit. He removed the top, added proper baffling and fully welded them, and I had him add an in-tank pump. He easily could've said he wouldn't fix someone else's product, and wanted me to buy a new tank. He mentioned buying a new tank, but it was still less expensive to fix mine. The customer service to go with it is worth it.

I have the NL tank. Not sure how low it is but I'm sure it's not visible from the rear. I'm just now mounting mine. BTW, it's 19 gallon.

I'm about to cut the hole in my bed floor for my filler, which is similar to the one you used. Since the bed floor isn't flat, Did you do anything to take up the gap between the filler plate and the stamped "dip" in-between the runners on the bed floor?

I'd ask the best way to cut the hole in the correct spot, but I know you're just gonna say "measure measure measure and then after that measure again.":D

I bought the Bed Floor Fill Kit that is sold by Boyd so it worked great. It deep enough to go past your bed floor and matches up with the filler pipe.

Another vote for Boyds....I have them in 2 trucks. Excellent tanks and they look nice installed. Contact Az pro performance in the vendors section. They go on sale about once a year.

Hey mdeal. Check out Robs No Limit facebook page.They sell a trick piece to put your filler inthe bed floor.It is cut to fit the steel bed floors.Looks like a really neat piece.IMHO

Well, I finally got my tank in. I like it. You can't even see it with the truck at ride height! Filler worked out pretty good too. :metal:
