tbi cam options without computer problems
 

got a buddy that just got a sweet 87 blazer with 350 tbi, but looks like it needs a cam....he's an older guy, so he doesnt want to mess with a "chip" or nothin like that

what cam would just bolt in there without screwing with the computer?? he doesnt have a lot of money....any suggestions? i've never had to rebuild a tbi, so dont know what would work, but figured for sure someone on here would know

maybe try to find a used 350 tbi cam?

All of the major cam manufacturers have a camshaft that are EFI friendly, many without needing to put in a new chip.

I just helped a buddy put one an Edelbrock TBI camshaft into his 89 K5 with a 350TBI, and he picked up a pretty significant bit of power without having to mess around with the chip. Though, I do think that some dyno tuning would still do the truck a ton of good.

You should be able to buy a stock cam from your local parts store, or as stated above. I would call a company like comp cams or edelbrock or whomever and ask them what they recommend.

didnt even think about going with the parts store route...duh

ended up finding a stock replacement cam from autozone for $45

To keep the MAP sensor from going nuts, try to keep the duration under 218 deg @ .050, and go with at least a 112 lobe center (preferably 114). The map sensor is reading manifold pressure (vacuum), and when you start scooting the cam's duration higher, the vacuum signal gets degraded, and the map sensor tries to compensate by moving the idle up and down searching for the vacuum signal that falls within map sensor's factory pre-set range. If I recall, it has to be around 17-19 inches.

There's lots of reputable cam companies (Lunati, Comp, Edelbrock) that make cams specifically for this application. I wouldn't buy a parts store cam because it's a generic grind that will give you zero performance gains over stock. Unless that's what he wants, which is fine.

I think Summit has the best one going. Cam and lifters on sale for 80.95

My Truck came with a locked up 305 (TBI) , upgraded to a 350 and installed the Summitt-1102 listed above. Idles very nice , Check Engine light stays off , No Codes. GOOD power , If you are upgrading to this cam , Recomend changing your valve springs due to the extra lift. The stock ones are crappy and I'm sure very tired.

One additional note, Due to cheap overseas materials used in replacement hydraulic lifters , Have read a few articles about lobe wear during break-in. I purchased quality ones from (Comp Cams) Cheap insurance I thought, DON"T forget about the "Break-in Lube"

New stock replacement valve spring will be fine. If doing the valve springs valve seals wouldnt be a bad idea.

I've not heard anything bad about the Summit cam and lifter kits.
