I've been sick as a dog the last couple weeks but I was feeling good enough over the weekend to get some progress made on the Chevy :metal:

I should have the motor and tranny out on Sunday and then I can pressure wash the heck out of the whole thing, paint the frame and start installing all my parts! I have a CPP disc brake kit on order and hopefully I will be ordering a Wilwood brake and clutch master cylinder this week. Way too nice of parts for way too junkie of a truck but it's going to be so sweet!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

I will be putting a power rack and pinion setup on the truck at some point and I was curious how people have done it themselves. The setup from Unisteer looks sweet but the price tag is just not in the cards and since I have some fab tools and skills, I'd like to do it myself.

For those that have done it themselves, did you attach the rack to the crossmember?

What about getting the geometry correct, did you space it the same distance from the crossmember as the center link?

I could build a bracket similar to the Unisteer bracket that would pick up on the holes for the idler arm and the lower steering box holes too, I just am not sure how to go about lining everything up front to back so I have proper geometry and steering.

Any help in this department is greatly appreciated!

Another thing I really want to do is swap the instrument cluster out for one with gauges. Is this a plug and play deal or do i need to redo the sending units and wire harness?

the best car show around is Vintiques Early Aug. In Yakima WA. They just opened it up to 60s vehicles and earlier, I think they actually moved it to 70s also not sure about that.
Its not a drive and shine its a show and there are some great events surrounding it too like the DRAGS. fun to see a 30 coupe do 90!
Like the project nice work

My buddy up there told me about that, I'll look into it a bit more, thanks!

Got my CPP disc brake kit for the front today. Can't wait to install it! Still looking at Wilwood master cylinders, gotta solidify what bore size I want and get it on order :)

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

Brakes and hydraulic clutch figured out and ordered!

I purchased a 1" Wilwood master cylinder kit for use with manual brakes. Not sure if I will need a residual valve for the rear drums or not but I'll get it sorted out soon. Maybe rear discs too if I can find what I want.

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

Dad and I were busy over the weekend! We pulled the motor and tranny out on Friday and started cleaning the frame up. Yesterday after the Easter festivities, we got the bed off the truck. I gotta say that it was way easier knowing that I had all new hardware coming so we didn't have to save any of the original stuff. The whole back half of the frame definitely has more rust than the front! I've gone through probably half a can of Kroil just on the back half of the frame :help:

Pulling the engine

Starting the bed tear down. I worked on as many of the underside bolts as I could while dad was cutting the heads of the fender mounting screws. He did an X in each head and used a chisel to break the heads off. Worked great!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1477/...cb1a16d8_b.jpg

We also broke the boards loose of the mounting bolts and just cut the heads off with the cutoff wheels.

Bed wood out and bed off. We ended up cutting all the bolts that hold the bed strips in too. I'm going to redo the floor with some nice plywood when I'm at that stage.

All cleaned up with a Rockwell photobomb
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1601/...7d40de33_b.jpg

Plans this week are to pressure wash the frame really well and wire wheel what's left behind. I'll be getting some POR-15 and coating the whole frame with that. Pretty soon it will be time to start working on fun things like brakes and suspension :metal:

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

I didn't get a whole lot done on the pickup over the weekend. I did go to the swap meet on Friday and ended up with a pretty nice bounty though. I picked up a front sway bar, new bellhousing for the T5, all the mounting brackets for the 292 and an instrument cluster that has gauges instead of the lights. I'll be tinkering with the cluster and cleaning it up before I put it in the truck.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1495/...0508bdaa_b.jpg

Saturday, I took the Jeep out to Cars and Coffee on my way to my buddy's house to work on his FJ40. I was able to park the Jeep next to another buddy's Coyote powered F100 :metal:
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1446/...24fe964d_b.jpg

The task for the FJ40 was to get the 350 in it before the end of the day. That was my goal anyway, my buddy was more concerned with drinking and smoking with the neighbors. Oh well, I cut all the brackets, drilled all the holes and got most of the welding done so it was successful!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1626/...f9cbca29_b.jpg

No cherry picker!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1616/...7cdfedff_b.jpg

Yesterday, I started getting the 292 sealed up and put back together and drilled some holes in my firewall. I'm hoping this week to have the motor all sealed and painted :chevy:

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

Thanks!

I think I've hit the fun part where I get to install all the parts I've had sitting in my living room for a couple months. Last night I focused on getting the last couple things done to the motor before I could start painting it while dad came over and pulled the rear bumper off. It's got a hitch that was welded on to the rear crossmember that fought us a bit but we prevailed.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1630/...a5575b5b_b.jpg

And my favorite part so far was getting that first coat of paint on the engine. I love it!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1576/...28139255_b.jpg

Tonight is looking like the night I will pressure wash the frame and clean a couple things up on the motor and give it another coat :metal:

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

Lots done yesterday! I clear coated the engine, pressure washed the frame, front clip and rear fenders, dad wire wheeled the frame and while he was doing that, I yarded the old steering and suspension off. We wanted to start getting some paint on the frame but I wanted to go to a Jeep cruise in for dinner so we called it quits around 4:30. I'm getting ready to order the Unisteer power rack and pinion steering kit today, I'm stoked for that!

Satin clear (engine paint) on the motor really made it look good

Front frame wire wheeled

Rear frame almost done. Just need from the axle back and then the inside as best I can

My supervisor was napping on the job most of the time. It's hard to find good help these days!

Pile of parts :metal:
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1575/...9abf6c4c_b.jpg

Dad smoked my Harbor Freight grinder
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1657/...862228e5_b.jpg

I also broke the Jeep coming home from the cruise in, I think it's just jealous that the Chevy is getting all the attention and money right now!

I never expected to separate the cab and frame but my buddy convinced me that I wouldn't regret doing it. He was totally right. It'll make getting the rest of the frame clean and slapping paint on it super easy. Hoping to have a freshly painted frame by Sunday. After that, reassembly can happen :metal:

My buddy came by and helped me get the Jeep back together and the first coat of POR-15 on the frame. Got a few more steps to get the frame how I want it but I love this kind of progress!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

Haven't had much for visual progress the last couple weeks as I was waiting on the frame paint but I got that the other day and squirted the frame before the rain hit :metal:. I used a chassis black mix from Industrial Finishes; it's a urethane base and covered the POR15 super easy. I love it!

Here's a shot of one of the motor mount towers, it'll look awesome on the Chevy Orange engine!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1692/...3073d62c_b.jpg

I also got a wild hare last night and wanted to show my firewall clean up off with a little wax. Looks great!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1464/...0036867c_b.jpg

I also discovered this number etched into the paint above where the master cylinder mounts. Anyone know the significance by chance?
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1474/...98417a3d_b.jpg

Dad and I will be hitting it hard on Sunday and get the frame back mounted to the cab so I can start on the reassembly part. I'm excited for that step!
