So I bought this truck a few weeks ago. Didn't think I was gonna be doing to much to it...well...kinda wrong. lol She's been running OK but sometimes on the way home she'd have some issues so were gonna fix them. I mean heck...I only paid 500 bucks for a truck I drove home. lol So some issues are no biggie. So here's some pictures of when I 1st got her. Has a 305E v6(1967 or later) and factory power steering and brakes. Video of when I got her home....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSk_ct9x-CU

So after getting her home I put some better tires on(pictures below) and just started to drive her. Carb is kinda crappy so she has hesitation, but other than that it seems fine...until....so last week I did an oil change...drove her to a friend's house..let it sit a few hours...and on the way home the engine starts spitting and sputtering..the sound you get when your running on 4 outta 6 cylinders...well limp her home and park it....next day fire it up and dump a bunch of B12 carb cleaner through the carb and she clears right up. So skip a day or two my tune up parts are in so I put in my new points, coil, distributor cap, plugs, and plug wires and the thing starts knocking like crazy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyhgUvL-2wU So after much tinker and figuring the knocking literally just goes away all by itself. lol Drive it around a little and no knocking, and the experts suggested a sticky lifter since it is a solid lifter engine and I have to agree. So anyhow..here's a video of how she runs After the tune up and when the knocking quit.

Cool truck! Mine was the same price not including shipping. I believe the 305E was 63 and later. The tag on the kickpanel of my truck says 305E.

If you keep that motor look into doing the Holley 500 carb swap.

Yeah, I'm think of either the 500 2 barrel or a quadra jet 4 barrel. I meant that the engine is not original....we ran the numbers and came up with a 67 or later model engine. :gmc2:

man I really like crusty old work trucks. those 305s are torque elephants, do you carry a log chain in case you have to beach a whale or pull a house down?

A loose piece of carbon in a cylinder will produce a knocking noise that goes away when it gets spit out

Yep I'm thinking it was a piece of carbon. Engine has been running fine since. Just needs to be driven so everything can find its place. lol

I hoping the new head gaskets, and carb kit will fix the hesitation when cold and also fix my issues when running at operating temp. Old truck with bugs to work out. lol This motor has an attitude of its own I tell ya. :gmc2:

I'm sure you'll get it resolved. You seem pretty handy around the engines.
