Steering box options, where did all the threads go?

I know we've talked about this several times, and I've been trying to search for the threads with no luck and I can't figure out why. Anywho, I need a new box for my 1998. I know people have talked about the jeep box for a quick ratio upgrade, but I'm pretty sure that only applies to like 88-94's due to something with the steering shaft.

I just want a tight, leak free box for my truck. Don't need fancy, don't need upgraded anything. If I could buy a brand new oem box I would, but that's not a thing. These mass produced rebuilds just slap new seals in as you cannot buy new gears to replace worns out ones inside the box. I don't want to deal with that crap, I'm tired of swapping boxes to find a good one. My original was great but started leaking like crazy, just want to get back to that box's feel.

I wish I knew. Never had any steering box issues on my 92, 94 or 96. The 94 had almost 300K and the 96 had 200K when I got rid of them. I do know what you mean about some of these remanufactured parts, they just don't do it. Hope you can find a solution.

If you hung onto the old box... re-seal it and go.

Try Red Head Steering https://redheadsteeringgears.com. Not cheap but I've heard good things, and I have one in my garage waiting to go into my Yukon.

The Jeep upgrade is a shaft upgrade to eliminate slop from the rag joint. I also have one of those ready to go when I get around to it.

Just went through this. The Jeep bolt holes were different than my 1993 despite everything I read. Not sure why, if I had the wrong jeep model or something else.
I gave in and spent the money on a Red Head and glad I did. I went with a quick ratio, replaced the rag joint and it is like brand new. ZERO play.

I have done put on 4 different steering gears on my 77 k3500 and have another one to put on and try. I will tell you its hell to put one on by ur self .I bought my gears from napa and I have one on my 79 with 38s on it .it works perfect can turn it with one finger . I called the place that rebuild these for napa bbb industry and they seem not to care about the problems with the gears. so all you can do is put them on and see ifs its good or not

From what I remember the steering shaft on later OBS's like my 98 is different and has no rag joint, so the jeep column swap doesn't work. Same reason redhead doesn't list a box for after 94 trucks, but even they can't tell me why when I emailed and asked them. Very frustrating.
