For those with a smooth firewall, did you opt to not use the VA plate and if not, does the holes in the firewall they unit bolts through hold up to daily driving or would the plate really be necessary?

I am getting ready to drill the holes but wonder if I need the plate to give the unit some structure....

I didn't use the VA plate, but I did use a bulkhead plate for the hoses. I didn't want to just put the hard lines through the fire wall. The difficulty in that I'd that you have to make up new hoses on the cab inside to replace those hard lines. And boy is it tight under there.
To answer your original question. The weight of the unit will be fine bolting directly to your firewall. The bracket also hangs on the inside of the under dash.

I’m not trying to hijack your thread Elf. I too am planning to run the VA unit. I am going to shave the kick panel vents. When I do this there will be no need for the cowl vents. Am I correct? I want to weld them for a cleaner look. Also how does the VA kit get fresh air? Thanks fellas!

The.VA kit does not have a fresh air intake.

Not being a jerk, just curious: with the wing windows and the kick panel vents, is it a big issue? When I'm using the A/C here in Phoenix, I'm using it mainly on re-cyclical function. Having the unit where it is just processing extreme hot air over and over isn't nearly as effective.

Also, are there any aftermarket systems that maintain the ability to use fresh air?

I just put my VA kit in, so as of now I haven't seen fresh air necessary. I guess if I have a passenger that ate to much cabbage I'll just roll down the window.
I'm not sure if any other kits have fresh air.

I've looked but not seen any aftermarket kits that have fresh air functionality. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has.
