Yep, Depends on what you're talking about. Camaros had no computer Control until 81. I think it was just some kind of electronics on the carb.

most GMs were 80 - 82.

For GM, as far as "standard" goes, the '80-1/2 Olds Cutlass with the 231 V6 was the first IIRC. Just about all the other car models followed in '81. While pickups had some computerization in '81, they didn't have computer controlled fuel metering until '87 when TBI took over.

"Optional" goes back further. GM offered multiport FI in '75 on Cadillacs. I have one of the engines complete minus the computer- I didn't feel like yanking it. And it is big and slow, kinda like this one:

My '80 Ols Cutlass had a computer controlled 260 V8. It olny had a few wires hanging out of the dist. and a couple out of the carb, so it wasn't too hard to rip it all out when I put my Rockett 350 in there.

i just saw that movie a few months ago... kinda amazing how dated it is now. It was the most expensive movie ever made for a LONG time.

What about the`77 Seville with the fuel injected 350 Olds?Was that computer controlled?

Yep, I had one of those too. But I don't remember if it was standard, or optional.

At least GM wasn't like Mopar with the lean burn computer on the side of the air cleaner! That was a total joke!

I was asking about GM trucks. I would like to find an old truck to fix up/hop up and I didn't want to have to deal with a computer if I swapped cams etc.

Uhh how bout the first vehicular device to have a computin device?

Im bettin ford had the 1st computer because they are hardly ever Found On Road Dead, It was too send an electric shock thing to it to restart the POS, right........right?

This is a good question.I`d say,and I could be wrong,that anything from`86 back because that`s the last year of carbs and TBI is computer controlled.I don`t think the computer`s a big thing to deal with until you get into electronic o/d transmissions.

For Chevrolet trucks i think for computer control 84 may have been but im not 100% sure and 85 did have a computer control carb i use to have one.

For Chevrolet trucks the first year for Fuel Injection would be 1987 it was TBI wich isn't really a true fuel injection system but it's easy to convert to a MPFI system and thats what i did to my '87!!


BTW i use to have a 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 231 and it had what GM called CCC Computer Controled Carburator! the Computer was very limited on what it controled as a matter of fact you could actually unplug the ECM and the car would still run normally!
