What size tire can I replace a set of 255 85 16r with they seem to be an expensive size. It's on a 86 k10

You must have aftermarket rims. 255/85r16 is about the perfect size for these trucks but 15's are cheaper. 16's are usually 10 ply so they cost more.

My wife's grandfather built the truck a lot of stuff has been changed on it and a lot of different years of parts into it. I think the engine and trans are out of a 76 Camaro. The drivetrain is a 85. The engine has had all emissions removed and all electronics taken off. For some reason he did away with the hei I guess . It doesn't run right as it won't idle without feathering the gas and that's even with it warm. The windshield wipers won't work there's a bit to do.

I have 235/85R16 on my 83 C20, so I don't know about a K10, but I recently got some 225/70R16 for the front of my truck and I did not realize what a difference there was in just a few numbers. The front tires lower the truck about 1.5-2 inches in the front. Reminds me of high school.

You can use an online "tire size calculator" to determine what you want: taller/shorter, wider/narrower and then search for that size and see what comes up. Seeing what tirerack and discounttire have give you an idea of what's standard and what's oddball. For instance, I recently found that what seems like an oddball size 255/55 r18 is fairly common and not expensive since many manufacturers make them -- stock size on the BMW X5 I guess.
