Powder Coating Alloy Wheels....what do you think?
 

Still looking into getting my Accord wheels rehabbed, a local painter suggested powder coating.

I live in the rust belt and these wheels would be used during winter. What do you guys think about blasting and then powder coating?

It would be the most durable way to coat them. All these black aftermarket wheels you see are powder coated alloy.

Actually the most durable would be Cerakote. That crap don't come off for nothing!

I looked far and wide for a coating to put on my 1911. Cerakote is the absolute best. You can't even get that off with a sand blaster if done per their directions. They sent me a sample of the black I was looking at. It was a strip of aluminum with their coating applied 0.0015 thick. I twisted it, bent it around a sharp edge, smacked it with ball peen hammer and scraped it across cement. The only damage was to the base metal. Then I bought the stuff and did a sample myself with 1/4" steel. The sand blaster sand just bounced off the surface. I suppose if you heated it past the 400 degree curing temp you might be able to get it off. The directions call for repeated soak in acetone and bake at 350 to get all contaminants out.

There isn't many products in this world I endorse, but this stuff I am behind 110%

I don't doubt your word. How does the cost compare? Is it practical for his old wheels? I've had powder coated wheels at the commercial sandblaster that they couldn't strip till they took a grinder to it to break through. I'm saying I think it's the best coating commonly used on wheels. I think it's a good idea.

I guess powder coating would be very good.

I found a TV base plate (3/16 inch steel) and my dad wanted me to weld it to a bit of channel he had. I found I had to grind the powder coating off as the wire wheel attachment had no effect.

If this works I may be able to rehab my wheels for less than I can replace them with OEM. Thanks guys!
