New Transmission

I recently put a 350 crate motor in my 72 Chevy and kept the old TH350 trans. As it turns out, the old trans hasn't fared well and I have decided to replace it. Looking for advice on which replacement to go with, and from where to buy. I am inclined to just replace it with another TH350. Thanks for the input!

Also, I need to know how long the tailshaft is, 6 or 9 inch. Where exactly to I measure from? It looks like there are two possible areas to measure from (seams, if you will). Need to make sure I order the correct one

I'm interested in the answers you receive. I'm going through a similar situation with my 70 GMC. Though I've got the old 350 in mine. What crate motor did u go with and how much was it?

I got this one, and I love it. It's advertised at 365 HP but mine dyno'ed at 382. Love the engine... sounds great and has tons of power.

Measure from back face of trans case to end of output shaft

Assuming 2 WD trans,,,there are actually 3 lengths

Short 6"
Intermediate 9"
Long 12"

Post a pic of the old trans and someone will identify it for ya...

Find yourself a local trans shop that has a good reputation...that way if you get any issues you will have a local support / warranty loop...

That's definitely going to be the easiest and least expensive option. Unless you drive a ton of miles you'll take forever to break even on an overdrive transmission.

Assume your truck has the OEM TH350 and it will be the short shaft. Make some assumptions on $: Rebuilt TH350=$750. TH200 4R=$1500. So you only have to recover $750 and in enjoyment and driveability that is easy to justify. TH 200 4R is same overall length as TH350 short tail. Uses same driveshaft. Only have to move crossmember back to TH400 position... Here are some links I found on a Google search. Remember, buyer beware when it comes to auto transmission rebuilders... Pick one with a good reputation for warranty issues.

I’m planning on puttin an Extreme Automatics in my short step with a 427, but that’s going to be a $3000 trans...

I put an overdrive in anything I am going to drive. I have accumulated a collection of good 400 turbos.

A reputable transmission shop can build a 200r for that HP.
