Re: Post Pics of your 1960-1966 Chevrolet & GMC Scale Model Pickups

Thanks for the post. I did enjoy. Looking at the photos made be “harken back” to a project I did about 15 years ago before the time of internet, digital cams, and this site for me. A friend had purchased a “Revell model kit of a ’64 Chevy C-10 for me as a gift. On one cold winter evening, after not putting a model kit together in some 30 years, I took it out of its box and proceeded to start assembly. Initially I was going to make it my “dream truck”. You know the truck I always wanted. However, while doing so, the thought of an actual truck that I see in my area came to mind.
In my area, there is a “handyman” that drives an old beat up mid-60s truck. Flat bed, rust eaten, dirty, trashy, and a combination of several different trucks put together over the years.
The more I thought about it the more I knew I had to build a model of that truck. So, for the next few weeks as time allowed, I would go to places where I knew the guy was known to “hang out”. I’d park next to his truck and study it. Doing so, I learned many things about the truck. It started life as a ’64 Chevy SWB, pale yellow with white top. Bed had been removed and a flatbed fabricated (two model A Ford flatbeds fused together to make one) installed. Saddle tanks (from a “Gleaner” combine) placed under the bed in front of the rear wheels. Both doors were replaced with orange doors, hood, and hood corners from a GMC. The bed has a huge cross bed tool box painted orange.
I gained much enjoyment fabricating parts, creating rust, dents, lights, trash for the dash board; tear in seat, west coast mirrors, and putting that model together. I even made miniature tools, winch, ladder, headache rack, and junk to place on the bed. Upon completion, I wanted to show it to the individual. Not really knowing the Individual other than by name, I was not sure what his reaction would be. After hauling the model with me several days, I finally located him at a café. I walked in with model in hand. As I passed the table he was seated at, I set the model on the table without explanation, then proceeded to the table behind him. I had no more than sat down when he turned around with model in hand and said, “This is amazing”.
I never intended to give the model to him, however after his reaction I could not take it back.
End of this long story. Several weeks later, I wrote a check to pay at a store. The clerk read my name on the check and asks, “Are you the guy that made the model of my father’s truck?” She told me he put the model on a shelf then instructed everyone in the house to never touch it. To this day, when I see that truck on the road, I think of that model truck and wonder if it is still on the shelf.
Wish I had taken a photo.
Shorty

I agree. Very cool story and thanks for sharing. That's the stuff that makes it all worthwhile. I imagine it probably is still sitting on the shelf, perhaps more treasured than the real thing.

I am rebuilding an 1963 c10 fleetside with my son and we have this questions.

1. Which backspacing are you running on your front and rear wheels ?
2. I was looking for a model car kit like yours for hours, but i did't find anything.

Man, I wish I still had mine.

About 15 years ago I had a friend who's dad painted high end cars. He had some Candy Apple Pearl left over from a job which cost about 300/qt. I took my 1966 C10 Fleetside over there and he painted it with that paint.

I went all out on details on that truck including plug wires made out of thread. I used parts from several other models and it had a real hotrod look to it.

It is what got me interested in the 60-66 Chevys. A couple years ago I trashed and some more I think it due to the glue starting to let go and wish like crazy I would not have.

Has anyone been able to find or kitbash together a long stepside box? I've been thinking of this for a while and would like some pointers, plus, anyone here any good at custom casting parts like the old step bumpers?

I did it with a square body kit long bed fleet side, bought an extra bed from some guy on ebay that sold a bunch of model kit parts.

The step side bed would be much easier to pull off with a plain styrene that you can purchase from most hobby shops.

Much appreciated TexasJeff, I will look into that. I also might find online or at a hobby store to look for some diamond plate styrene so I can recreate the step bumper like mine has as well. Any pointers on extending a '64 shortbed frame into a longbed frame?

Re: Post Pics of your 1960-1966 Chevrolet & GMC Scale Model Pickups

I can’t remember which brand carries it (perhaps both do) but I’ve bought sheets of styrene diamond plate from either Plastruct or Evergreen. When skinned with Bare Foil, it looks real:

This is my original 1960 GMC model. The first two pictures were taken with flash, the last picture is without flash:

The scale may be off by a tad, but it fools the eye into thinking it’s correct.

found some other rims to try out
Attachment 1176220 Attachment 1176226

started pulling it apart
going with the "daisy" style 5 spokes. since their from a car, i have to make my own rims. my 14b does'nt have a cover, so making that too.
on the plus side, found some calipers & rotors i can adapt, so one less thing to make
Attachment 1176227

started making leaf springs, had enough plastic to do ONE pack, down to the model shop tomorrow i guess. putty'ed up my 14b cover, will sand it to the 14b angular shape, also cut & modified the tubes on my 44. transfer case is out of later model chev, will knife & putty it to resemble a 205
Attachment 1176228

couple rims done. will start modifying the frame tomorrow. also found a tunnel ram, hmmm... that 283 might have a hard time spinning them new tires.
my son also just gave me the usa-1 monster truck in the background. seeing how i already have one, i'm thinking using the tires on my '58 cameo, ala skoal bandit style, or my '69 el camino, ala chevelle in a china shop dorito's commercial style

This is my 1\10th scale 64 Crew Cab. I built the body from sheets of styrene plastic, and built the chassis and drive train from leftover parts and parts from ebay.

I used a Photoshopped pic from this site to build it, I just liked how they redid the back doors, (probably not functional, but I thought it looked good :))

Very cool collection of 60-66 models! Here are a few of mine. Dieseldawg, you have some really cool models!

The turquoise/white one is a AMT kit while the red one is a Revell/Monogram kit.

right back at ya DirtyLarry!
your turquoise & white one looks like a real truck sitting there. also like your plug wires. not crazy about hobby shop plug wire kits, scale just looks a little too big for me. i separate the strands in a piece of speaker wire & use them. yours look like old school braided wires-cool!
your red is the same kit i'm converting right now. i didn't get 2 outside mirrors like yours though-bummer. i like the copper look tubes coming from your heater box. nice touch.
i find speaker wire more to scale. check the fueler-dual plug heads, can you say flippin' tedious?
Attachment 1176689 Attachment 1176690
and why not stuff my plate some more. was at the hobby shop today & found some styrene that kinda looks like rv siding. couldn't help myself, bought some, going to do a replica of my camper to go on the replica of my crewcab.
a preliminary rough
