Does anyone here have the steering wheel clunk. Interested in DIY?
 

I recently took a butt load of pics while I pulled my Intermediate Steering Shaft out of my truck to lube it, after which I completely solved GM's problem by drilling and tapping a grease zerk into it, then I welded the end shut so the grease couldnt come out, but if anyone has the dreaded steering wheel shudder, shake, clunk... etc, and would like to fix it without spending the 100-200 dollars at the dealer to fix it, which isnt a proven method, I can show you how I fixed mine, really helps out if you have a fullsize '99-07 Classic Body style pickup truck. Seems all of them did this.

Call Borgeson. You may have to google it. They make a new piece that slides right in. it is about 185 bucks but it will fix the problem.

Well I've already fixed mine, for about 12 dollars and it'll never give me any more problems, plus I've not heard that the Borgeson shaft actually fixes it, I've heard tell they are a beefier shaft, but still have the same problem, which is the spline engagement in the shaft becomes unlubed via gravity/engine heat, making it all run out of the shaft.

My question to everyone is if they would like a write up on removing this shaft and lubing it, its only like 2 15mm bolts and 3 10mm nuts, but lubing it, and I can give some guidance on where to drill and tap the hole and all that other cool stuff. If you have the equipment, you can do it all by yourself and save yourself a butt-ton of money...

I put the new GM shafts in mine, so far haven't had any problems with em. They're made different and have a inner Teflon like plastic lining to alleviate the clunking sound felt/heard in the wheel. I always figured you could just put a grease fitting in em and never have a worry. Never tried it, always just lubed em using the stuff from the gm kit and silicone brake grease or high temp wheel bearing grease...

I am a tech at a chevy dealership... If you want to fix if in like 30 seconds, take the bottom bolt out of the shaft and basicly jack it off about 5 times.. this will fix it for about 15-20k.. If you want a permanent fix.. buy the new designed gm shaft.. its the ****..

thanks for the help, I will probably end up buying the borgeson shaft but for now I will pull and stroke the shaft. (got the quote straight from the GM recall sheet)

I would like the info on how to fix this. Can I go down to the dealer and have them give me a recall sheet on my truck. That steering wheel crap is driving me crazy.

Well if you want the dealer to fix it, yes, you can go to them and have them run your VIN and see if they've done the updated Intermediate Steering Shaft replacement. The new ISS runs about 120 and should be a total of about 200 after labor. I had this shaft lubed when it was under warranty and the rep told me they had ordered a replacement, but they were on national back order and they had one clue on when they would come in. Guess that was BS. I will look at what you have on this other site. Thanks, Waylon

I had mine done when it was under warranty and its starting to do this clunking noise again. Is this part (19153614 )your talking about going to fix this for good or is it going to start clunking again in another 25 K ? :confused:

Well see, Thats the thing, you can install that new shaft, with the new part number, but I've heard from more than a few folks, that the clunk eventually comes back. My route fixes it permanently. Hey if you still are under warranty, be my guest to get it replaced under warranty, but if your warranty is up, and you feel like spending 15 bucks rather than 80-200, My idea is more up your alley.

Just had the steering shaft on my 07 Classic replaced under warranty. 23,000 miles on it. My Son in law has an 04 1/2 ton and had it done several times. He has been a loyal G.M owner. He bought a new 2000 Malibu Classic sold it bought a new 03 Tahoe the 04 1/2 ton crew then traded the Tahoe on a new Escalade in 05. His 04 is still having the problem and G.M. says it is now his problem. He says he will not buy another new G.M. vehicle. At only 24 yrs old he is going to buy a few more cars in his day. G.M. will be the loser in the long run.

I let the trunk monkey stroke mine.:devil: I just quit the GM tech takes it up the *** job and now I don't have to stroke the shaft and am making a decent living. If you have a fix for this you might make a mint if Chevrolet doesn't take it as there own repair. Get a patent. Every truck that came in needed it in some way, shape, or form. Rattle, Rattle, Rattle. My five year old recommended the fire guy.

My truck hasnt made a sound since I done mine. I took pictures of how to pull it out and reinstall it, I never took pictures of how to put the grease zerk in mine. If any member has a truck that makes the noise around Jacksonville, NC. I'd be happy to fix your for free, so I can do the tutorial about it. Basically just drill a hole in the shaft, tap the hole, then clean it out. Put the "U" shaped piece of metal back in. Weld the little holes up, Then put the firewall boot on the shaft. Install the grease zerk, then bolt the steering column portion in, then pump it full of grease to expand it into the lower Steering shaft, Then it'll be fully greased and DONE.
