temp. gauge
my coolant gauge isn't working, wanted to start with the easiest first, is there a way to check gauge to see if this is the fault, or start somewhere else
gauge panel is removed for access |
Re: temp. gauge
Have looked at this? http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/sm...1241#msg211241
There is info on earlier gauges as well. |
Re: temp. gauge
Here are a few threads on this issue. I assume you have the electrical gauge with the sender in the left head.

Re: temp. gauge
What year is your truck? Let's see a picture of the sender. Did it just quit working, or has not worked since you got the truck? Just wondering what changed.

sender may be a hard pic to get, plus all my anti freeze will leak out, but ill try just thought you could hook up some meter, and bingo, the answer pops out truck is a 72 Jimmy, with 350 ci TPI and FAST efi |

Re: temp. gauge
Don't need the sender taken out. The question is does it look like the one in the video? If you have some other sender, it will not work. You will not be able to see the threaded part without removing it, but that is OK, just make sure the part that shows looks like that. If you have a sender with some other shape, or a spade connector, or screw connector, then you have the wrong sender.
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....2FL._SX90_.jpg At room temperature the resistance from the connection knob on the sender to the nut-shaped part which is ground, is about 350 ohms. At operating temperature it will be about 75 ohms. Those are rough figures. EDIT: let me correct those figures, I measured on my truck and it's roughly 500 ohms cold, 120 ohms at operating temperature. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...53#post7680753 |

Re: temp. gauge
Any car parts store should have it or be able to get it if you give them the make/model/year of your truck. Make sure when they pull it up on their screen it is ACDelco G1852 and when it is handed to you it looks like the picture. There is a vendor called Lectric Limited that people like for that part as well.
Mine was from Amazon.com https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C9SM22/. I have modern heads on my engine and the hole is 3/8NPT instead of the stock 1/2NPT size, so I had the sensor turned by a machinist. There are some machinists here on the forum who provide that service for us. Picture by forum member B. W. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1483029936 Info about turning the sensor http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=703388&page=2. If you need that service, Brian Mac says he gets the part locally, turns it and ships it, so you could have shipping one way. A1971Blazer offered the same. So that would mean you don't need to get one first. I already had the sensor, so I shipped it to A1971Blazer. This is depending on what size hole in the head you have. :-) When I replaced mine, I loosened the radiator cap, removed the old sensor and held my finger over the hole while I got the new sensor in my hand. I only lost a cup or 2 of coolant. You only need a single wrap of teflon tape on the sensor, don't go overboard with it. Some people say you don't need any. |
Re: temp. gauge
thanks for all the info. ghreat place to start, Ill give NAPA a shot
I have vortec heads so, im not sure the size of the threads |
Re: temp. gauge
OK, napa had one, now to get my lathe working and find my 3/8 die, thanks for all the help
|
Re: temp. gauge
OK, 71 Blazer, machined one down for me, now what connecter do I use, will a 1/4" connecter fit on there
I anyone needs a sender LMK as I have an extra |
Re: temp. gauge
It is this type of connector:
https://static.summitracing.com/glob...o-5665a_ml.jpg https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001RPPRXC/ or https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pco-5665pt or this listing is interesting because it gives a list of exactly what parts were used to assemble the pigtail. It makes me wonder if he would assemble one for you with your choice of wire length. https://www.ebay.com/itm/132363680772 If you also need the wire and cloth jacket used for heat protection as it normally lays on the engine, https://www.americanautowire.com/sho...ire-repair-kit I'm needing to re-do my wire and deciding what exactly to get. |
Re: temp. gauge
Yes it is, sender came with a plastic shield, but no connecter, I have the clothe wire cover, on the wire, looks like AA has the right connecter, at least that's what I remember it looking like.
waiting for my sweet butt connecters to get here, thanks for the lead on the connecters also, bought an IR gun, to double check the system I may move my sensor to the intake manifold, since the wire now sits close to the exhaust manifold, cleaner install run thru intake |
Re: temp. gauge
started truck up, IR gun said 164 degrees, gauge a first mark, now just to find proper connector( push on), right now it has an alligator clip and twisted wires.
Thanks everyone for getting me to this point, great board |
Re: temp. gauge
just ordered kit from AA, now have to figure out routing as it seems to go over exhaust manifold (HOT)
Maybe it went down the back of the block and over to the sender under the manifold |
Re: temp. gauge
I believe it does not go over the exhaust manifold. It goes from the wire bundle that is on the clip held by one of the transmission bell housing bolts on the passenger side, past the distributor and up on top of the engine intake manifold and runs the length of the driver side valve cover, and then down the front of the engine and under the end of the exhaust manifold, and then to the sensor. The cloth cover or tube goes on the wire where it lays on the engine.

Re: temp. gauge
perfect, that makes sense, thank you. Just received my kit from AA, so I'd like to finish it up correctly.

I should also thank a1971blaser for making this all happen as he was the one who turned down the sensor to 3/8" with speedy turn around time and AAwire for the factory kit, for the connectors. hardest part was fishing green wire thru the factory type shielding, spent a hour on that I know its not the right way(makes wire brittle), but wasn't happy with my crimp, so I put a SMALL dab of solder on the crimp fed the wire thru intake as Lambert suggested, makes for a clean installation still have to run a couple more heat cycles before I lock the tabs down on my exhaust manifold You can slip on the plastic cover after you make your wire crimp If anyone has to do this repair I have an extra sensor and connecter and shielding to make repair, free except shipping charge |
Re: temp. gauge
I have since i was 20
Solder all connections on my truck crimped hoops and solder splices get stuck up a mountain with no tools Start wiggling things find a hidden butt splice making little connection Use teeth and rocks to cut and strip wire twist together drive home and pull the harness out and go through every wire |
Re: temp. gauge
This is good information.
Thanks |
Re: temp. gauge
have you gotten your gauge off of full hot yet, I have an extra nos oem gauge
|
Re: temp. gauge
Hi Jim,
I'm still working on it. The gauge seems to work when I have it removed and bench test it with jumper wires and a battery, but not in the vehicle. I believe I have short in the lead somewhere. It will probably mean an entire week end pulling the wiring harness apart to find it. Thanks for the offer on the gauge. |
