Winter Projects

I have a 1979 c10 SPORT stepside.

So I have a strange vibration I have had since I have owned the truck, 25 years. Frame off restoration and it is still there. I had a leak on the front seal of the diff. Changed the seal. still leaks. Leads me to believe the pinion is bad. Thinking about replacing it. How hard is this. I have seen videos and what not but I am scared about getting that crush sleeve set right. Do I need to pull the axle to get the pinion out? Do I need to replace the ring as well? Anybody have a posi unit I can just throw in? I have a 12 bolt rearend.

I am scared. help a guy out..

Thanks
Chris

if your asking these questions then i dont think you should attempt to setup a set of gears . not trying to be rude just firm to the point of saving you a lot of trouble .

the ring AND pinion come as a matched pair . do not mix/match them at all .

yes the whole axle has to come apart to do the job .

if you want a posi look at detroit true trac posi units . lots of guys love them on street driven trucks . and no special lube additive required . no clutch disks to burn out .

have you even had the drive shaft checked by a shop that does shafts ? i have seen lots of vibration problems come back to a bad balance / mix matched parts when a u-joint was replaced stuff like this . i would check this way before a re-qear .

good luck and hope you get this figured out . and look here for a little more indepth job on how a gear setup job is done . yes its a dana 60 but almost the same setup as a gm 10 or 12 bolt rear . this guy is the king of step by step indepth info . http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Gear_Setup/

and nice truck love the blue . almost like my 85 2wd sb truck . :metal:

Thanks, no offense taken. I know the axle has to come apart, the question is, does the whole rear end have to come out of the truck? I did a complete frame off and overcame many issues I was concerned about, I am confident I can do it, just need some outside confidence to push me. I will check the driveshaft first. thanks
