Reverse lights

I'm trying to figure out what the mechanism is that makes the reverse lights come on and where it is. I've installed a back up camera and wired it to my reverse lights, but I have to hunt around with the gear shift to get the reverse lights to come on, like the switch is worn out or something. Thanks for any help.

Re: Reverse lights

It's part of the nuetral l safety switch located on the lower part of the steering shaft by the floor.
Hope that helps.

Re: Reverse lights

One of two things.
Your switch, on the lower steering column is loose, or out of adjustment.
If loose, turn the it key to run, put your shifter in reverse, move the switch left or right until the backup lights come on, then tighten the switch down.
Adjusting is the same but you just have to loosen the switch to begin.:chevy:

The reverse lights are wired to your NSS as stated by others. The wires are green and should be on your steering column. If they dont come on when you go into reverse you have to move the NSS left or right and try again. I just went through this not to long ago. Here is a diagram I found that helped me out. You can also look at my post to see if there's anything there that might help you as well. Good luck.

Re: Reverse lights

Also if it's a manual with three on the tree there are just the two green wires on the steering column switch (no NSS).

If it's three or four (or more) on the floor then the reverse switch is likely on the transmission or shifter mechanism under the cab floor and the two green wires go through the bulkhead connector to the engine harness.

Which one is it. The one dangling not connected to anything?
Or the one mounted to the firewall.
Mine used to be a 3 speed- now it's an automatic. I dont know exactly how messed up this is.
My reverse light bulbs were not in the sockets when I got it. I put them in and now they come on all the time.

Re: Reverse lights

Is it possible to have it on the steering column even though it is a 4 speed manual?
