steering column swap

I have access to a tilt column from an 86 suburban that I want to put into an 82 c10. the tilt has cruise, wiper controls on the turn signal lever. can I just replace the turn lever and call it good? when I took the bottom cover off to pull the thing ther was a cooling thing not sure what this is for but my son really wants the tilt in his truck so I am coming to all of you for guidance. also I can get the power windows ans lock out of it, how much trouble is it to swap all of that stuff? I was told the power stuff was on a seperate wiring harness? if this is true can I plug it into the 82 non power truck somewhere? thanks for the advice in advance!! Chip

Re: steering column swap

As far as the column goes I would say yeah. Just get a turn signal lever from the local auto parts store that does not have cruise. (they just pull out of the switch, no need to disassemble) The "cooling thing" you mention should be a black box with a silver heat sink in it and electrical connections on both sides........that is the wiper delay module. No need to use it since your switch is in the dash. You can just disregard it.... Hope this helps.

Re: steering column swap

can I change out the entire shaft if the connection doesn't fit? or does that open up a new set of problems. My friend said I can have the stuff but if it isn't going to work he wants it left alone to aid in moving the burb later. Also still looking for help on the wiring issue for the windows, are they "plug and play"?

Re: steering column swap

As far as I know there are two different column connection types. Both fit the rag joint at the gear box. So if it doesn't fit get the intermediate shaft with the burb column and you should be fine.

Re: steering column swap

i've seen two sizes on the steering box coupler
should be fine then with a whole shaft, if that fits

Re: steering column swap

If its any consolation...

I just changed out the column on my truck to that from an '80 K10 (I needed a floor shift column) and didn't get the intermediate shaft from the truck...a friend was parting an '86 K20 and it had the intermediate shaft I needed. It fit the steering box on my truck (stock as far as I know), as well as the K10 column no problem.

So as it was said before, as long as you pull it from the burb, you're probably safe

Re: steering column swap

Just a thought, an old steering column may need repairs. I had the upper column rebuilt on my 83 tilt because it was beyond my skill level, and the cost was not cheap. You might want to check the condition of the components before you put it together - might be cheaper to rebuild with it disassembled.

Re: steering column swap

Early columns (73-78) are 1"x48 spline, later 79-87 columns are 1"DD
Steering box splines are
(77 & earilier) 13/16"-36 spline
(78 & later) 3/4"- 30

So yes, It should fit

Re: steering column swap

Two questions.
1. Is the steering column wiper delay plug and play for the earlier in dash/delay wiper wiring?

2. Steering wheel shaft. What is the range of years that steering wheels interchange?

Alex.
