2 paint questions
 

Thanks guys.

1) Had a truck that someone sparayed the outer white rocker/kick panels with a clear type hard epoxy. Could barely tell it was on unless you were within 10 feet ..... and this stuff was crazy hard/impossible to scratch. Any ideas what it was ?

2) Firewall paint. Was planning on just using good old rustoleum black. Probabaly welding in patches for the existing fireall holes. Anything else that can be done to help with insulation/heat without going crazy ? Only other thing I thought of was like

1) not epoxy. It's gravel guard. Meant to be scratch resistant.
2) save your money and put towards proper sound deadening insulation

Thanks I'll be doing insulation on interior side of firewall - just wondering if anything can be done on exterior asides from something like LIZARDSKIN.

Got a link for gravel guard - I searched a bunch but nothing seems to resemble what I saw on truck. Very thick, almost like a plastic sprayed coating ...... hard to touch with fingernail. I can only see gravel guard in cheapo spray.

The only paint like products you need on either the engine side or carpet side of the firewall is epoxy primer and a good urethane paint.Insulate and carpet to your hearts delight on the inside but any kind of "LIzard skin" or bedliner is absolutely unnecessary by any means on either side of the fire wall.

Can you post a picture of the "plastic sprayed area" in order for us to help identify it?

Many new vehicle manufacturers are using different kinds of coatings but please realize that gravel guard can be purchased in cans designed to sprayed with a shutz gun which gives a pebbled surface. It still needs to be painted and cleared and understand that clear is very hard as is gravel guard. I wouldn't expect a finger nail to mark either as both are very hard.

Don't have the truck anymore - so cant post a pic. But what you described with the "pebbled surface" is pretty much how it was. Like a 5mm thick laquer looking cover to the white paint in a pebble texture.

When you say a good primer ....... I was just planning to use rustoleum - is this good enough ?

Not a show truck. Not too concerned on looks in bay - just want it to hold and not flake/peel over time

Rustoleum is a good brand but you'd be better off with a urethane primer that your local body shop supply store will have.
It will hold up better, be easier to sand and cure better too.

The Rustoleum would be next best but not as good as urethane high build.

Your paint will adhere to urethane better as well.
