I don't know much about pulling, but I'm subscribing to watch the progress and maybe learn something. Welcome aboard and congrats on your new project.

Today I made enough money for a new carb spacer. I am going to paint this truck black or gun metal grey(in my auto body class).. Which should I choose?

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

power bbc.

dont piss your money away on carb spacers and paint, buy some axles, a good tranny and some traction bars first.

start putting power through that drive train and you are going to have a real short season.

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

well a stock crank and rods hold up to quite a bit
is this going to be on the street?
get some flat top hyperutectic pistons
and some 64cc heads with decent sized valves and good flow numbers
a decent sized cam the right springs and the intake should say what it is
so will you go take the air cleaner off and let me know it should say performer, performer rpm or something similar
ill do the math later and get some good combos
ill post up the specs

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

Peak Horsepower: 360.4
@ 5500
Peak Torque: 405.0
@ 3500

this is with hp ported 2.02 1.60 heads a 256/268 duration .447/.454 lift comp cam (hydralic flat tappet) 10 to 1 compression performer intake 600cfm carb small tube headers
this is at a 4000 lb weight
it should say performer behind the carb close to the firewall
or if its a performer rpm its in front of the carb
the 260 will cut your torque and hp down

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

Someone told me double hump heads would be best.. and someone told me 350 heads would be a good add on.

jgh64pkup 12-20-2009 05:12 PM

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

what kind of budget do you have
yeah double humps would be good
or go with the vortec heads you will have to get a different intake and for that size cam you will need to cut the valve spring perches for better springs

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

How long will it take to switch a cam..

Chlsnk 12-20-2009 07:31 PM

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

I would suggest some roller tip rockers and a RV cam. The roller tip rockers really do help .

A cam swap is a pretty easy weekend job if you have never done it before. I may suggest you run to your local library and see if they have the haynes manual for your truck it will cover a cam swap.

Dudewith4x4 12-20-2009 09:18 PM

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

Thanks for all the advice. How long does it take for the roller rocks replacements?

jgh64pkup 12-20-2009 10:53 PM

Re: 1980 chevy long bed!

Yeah swapping cams is pretty easy you just remove the intake, valve covers, rocker arms, pushrods, and lifters, then you go to the bottom end loosen up the pan bolts pull the timing cover off, pull the big timing gear and chain off, put the timing gear back on without the chain put a bolt in it and remove the cam.
then do everything in the reverse order and make sure and use new gaskets, grey silicone (permatex preffered :D), new lifters, and timing chain. You can remove the bottom timing gear with a 3 jaw puller. oh and on the rubber end gaskets on the intake, throw those away and just use a thick bead of silicone.
and while your doing the cam swap you might as well swap rockers for some roller tips as above mentioned
you can pick up a set of stamped steel ones at jegs for like 90 bucks
