56 cab inside step
1 Attachment(s)
For lack of a better term, the inside step of the cab on my 56 2nd series truck, I'm wanting to know (and see pictures if possible), what others have done to cover this step. Have you covered yours to protect the surface or are you merely stepping over to enter the cab?? It's been suggested I use FLEX SEAL or RHINO LINING, what's your thoughts??

Re: 56 cab inside step
the box liner stuff is usually put on or makes it's own with heat with chemical reaction so that may affect your decision. not totally sure though. I had a cab done years back and the installer said if the cab was freshly painted he wouldn't do the job unless it had sufficient time to cure. whatever you put on, make sure the surface is clean and free of rust etc. otherwise it will be back to visit and the coating won't be easily removed. some of the box liners stuff is also a bit slippery when wet. also, try not to cover the door seal area if possible.

one thought i just had, (they come in spurts), was if there's any bondo in the step area, would this sealant adhere to it?? NO, I was only going to cover the step area. |
Re: 56 cab inside step
I'm planning to shoot mine with gravel guard after applying the basecoat and clear

I am thinking of using the 3M self healing clear film, though I suspect it would show a haze of small scratches after not too long.
My taste is a little over the top for bling so I've also considered installing low profile polished stainless strips though they would REALLY show scratches if there are tiny bits of grit adhering to your shoe when you step on them. http://www.mcmillanrodandcustom.com/...emoldings.ivnu |

Re: 56 cab inside step
If it's a trailer queen, leave your driving slippers on the running board when you get out so they are ready for you to reenter.
If it's a driver, paint it and use it. This can be easily polished and or repainted if it gets too damaged. If it's a garbage dump hauler and construction site inspection vehicle, throw a piece of plywood or carpet on it. The only time it's going to be seen is when the door is open so I'd not be concerned about it. |

Some of us have waitied our entire lives to build our dream truck - that's what I had to do. I'm not building and selling like a lot of guys. I want mine to be nice and I want it to STAY nice for as long as possible. Mine will get driven regularly. It will not be a "trailer queen" but that doesn't mean I want it to get all the assorted little scratches and look b!tched-up after the first year. |

MY "driving slippers".

Re: 56 cab inside step
Despite not using the steps, mine were pretty scuffed up after 7 years of use. I think using a surface that's tougher and more forgiving than just paint is the way to go on a driver. I don't want it to look bad because it will bug me every time I get in or out of the truck.

Re: 56 cab inside step
i did body color base/clear and then covered the steps with clear 3M paint protection film
you can buy enough to cover both steps for $37 on amazon i had a pro friend install it, he does all the high dollar car bras in the metro area and used his scraps :D 8 years and 32,000 miles they still wipe clean after going thru the car wash (for dan) :D i'm a gimp and need to use the steps to get in and out of my truk i highly recommend going this route if you like body color steps :metal: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....L._SL1500_.jpg |
Re: 56 cab inside step
FWIW i am unimpressed with a bedliner called Hippo.

Re: 56 cab inside step
I did the gravel guard - or chip guard on mine - but to last longer - usually for better results - they recommend you apply the chip guard before sealing, color, etc. Looks great - and wipes clean.

Hey OGRE, I really like that stuff. I went online to see how to install the product. I like that, thanks.

Re: 56 cab inside step
I sprayed my Step area with the rattle can bedliner after stripping them and primed and painted with the rustoleum also drilled a 1/4" hole in the corners for drainage prior to the coatings.
If you were to put the pricy polished strips, Id carry a patch of carpet as Foot stomper suggested to protect them from scratches , Kindda defeats what your trying to do. If I were to paint them nice , might try Ogres cover or could use anti slip tape as used on stair treads, they have clear, brown, black, and glow in the dark.... I think just 1" on the top of the ribs would look nice. LinK: https://www.slipguardinc.com/collect...slip-tape-roll ;)Have a Snickers bar Dan, were all trying to help ;) |

Re: 56 cab inside step
Now I'm thinking about the clear 3M film. Sure would be easier and cheaper than mixing up bedliner and blasting it all over...
