Door hinge bolts

1 Attachment(s)
I bought new doors for my 56 and the threads are not fine 3/8-24 like the originals. They are coarse thread. Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: Door hinge bolts

Are those bolts the ones that go thru the hinge into the door? Or the ones that hold the hinge to the pillar? If they go into the door and the female threads in the door are coarse it shouldn't be a problem..

Re: Door hinge bolts

They are hinge to door. I thought they were all fine thread

Doesn't look right to me. Mine are fine thread.

Re: Door hinge bolts

Check threads in the door..if they're coarse thread then there's no problem..if the holes are fine thread your gonna need new bolts

Re: Door hinge bolts

my new doors were coarse thread also, just replace bolts

What bolts did you use?

Re: Door hinge bolts

if the doors have course threads then you need course thread bolts. just go to the bodyshop supply or your local parts store and grab some with the flanged head so they look the same except for the threaded part. bingo bango and bob's your uncle. waaaaay too much work to make them fine thread in the doors. I ran into this on the hinge pillars (for the other end of the hinge) that came from china with course threads. just buy new bolts and be done. put a little lube on them when you install.

Re: Door hinge bolts

It's not "way too much work" to make them fine thread, it's minutes, just run a fine tap through the holes, whamo, done.

HOWEVER

I don't think that would be a good thing to do. If it were a stereo mount, heck yeah, not a big deal. But a door, oh no, you do NOT want to do that as it will weaken the mounting point. The threads will never be the same.

Just change the bolts and get on with life.

To change them correctly to fine WOULD be way way, WAY too much work and it's not worth it by any means. Most every door I have ever pulled up to right now on 2017 cars the bolts are course thread. Why they did those fine back then, I don't know, but it most certainly doesn't need to be fine thread.

Just change the bolts and get on with life.

Re: Door hinge bolts

ya, I agree with you there Brian, not too much work to just get fine threads but if you want fine threads that will hold a door it is a bigger job for sure. it is sort of like stripping a nut and then chasing thre threads and using it anyway. it would probably work but it would fail under a load. there would be too many threads cut in the hole to make it reliable after.
just use course thread bolts and carry on. flange head bolts are fairly cheap anyway. some have serrated flanges as well to hold tight better.

I already ordered coarse thread bolts from local Fastenal store. Problem solved.

i believe 55-7 had fine and 58-9 had course or vice versa

Re: Door hinge bolts

Martin sr..you had me scared with your advice for a second there...then I got to the "however" part..wheeeew..running a fine thread tap thru a coarse thread hole..real risk of breaking a tap in there..
A fine thread 3/8-24 drill hole size is .3320
A coarse thread 3/8-16 drill hole size is .3125..
talk about making a mess of the threads..I've seen it done..

Re: Door hinge bolts

You'd have to Drill First - and ( If I was going to do something like this )

I'd use a - Forming Tap - which can be done in - Two Stages . .
Go for a Class 3A Thread - so it's Snug on New Hardware . Most Hardware
Is Class 2A - and Class 1B Being Sloppy Crap from China .. Type workmanship ..

If You really want Great Class threads then Get Forming Taps made to do " J " Threads
Aircraft Industry ..

Re: Door hinge bolts

I know this thread wasn't started for me and my '49, but I just bought a bag of (50), 3/8x24 (grade 8) bolts from Fastenal yesterday for $20...After being told by Bowtie-bits to try Ebay.

The pillar side it definitely 24 thread pitch. Just ran a tap through them last weekend. I guess I assumed the door side was the same.

I've got the other half of the bag it somebody wants them.

My 59 has fine threads, I believe it is to make it easier to barely loosen for adjustment.

Also "Size for size a fine thread is stronger than a coarse thread . This is both in tension (because of the larger stress area) and shear (because of their larger minor diameter). 2. Fine threads have also less tendency to loosen since the thread incline is smaller and hence so is the off torque" according to my mechanical design textbook.

Do not know if the 55.2-57 had coarse threads or fine.

Beautifully explained! Now even I understand. LOL No, really, that makes sense.

I don't know if you have been to traffic court but you sound like the cop and I sound like the guy who go the ticket,

Judge: Officer O'Mally can you please explain what you saw?

Officer O'Mally: Yes your honor, I was sitting in my patrol car on fifth street 38 feet on the North/West corner of Main street and fifth. It was 78 degrees with a Easterly wind of 12.5 MPH. I witnessed Mr. Martin driving toward me Northbound on Main street in what appeared to be excessive speed. I pointed my Binford 1200 Radar detector which is calibrated a the factory at 65.8 MPH and checked by me every morning at 8:12 AM in my patrol car with the Tuning fork proved by Binford. My radar gun displayed 38.4 MPH speed of Mr. Martin's car. Main street has a 30 MPH speed limit so I pulled Mr. Martin over and gave him a ticket.

Judge: Mr. Martin, can you now give your side.

Mr. Martin: Duh, I wasn't speeding.

Re: Door hinge bolts

Don't want to throw a monkey wrench into this whole thing, but I replaced both of my A pillars on my cab with Dynacorn replacements and found that the lower threaded hinge hole on both pillars, were what I thought was 3/8X14but when I threaded a 3/8X14 ( or course thread bolt) into the pillar that bolt appeared to have too much play in the threads. What I found is I think it is a metric thread. I think I use a M10 but not sure as I don't have the package the bolts came in anymore. The metric bolt fit with a much better tolerance of fit to the threads. If I remember the head on the metric bolt took a 17mm socket. No saying this is what you have. Not saying this is what you should use. Just food for thought

In college I got in an accident. I was pulling out of a lumber yard drive way that had my field of vision blocked with a truck. A speeding volvo ran into the 59 front bumper. Scratched the paint and crinkled the license plate on mine, took out the bumper, fender, bent the hood and door on the volvo. I got cited for failure to stop. Insurance company refused to help me fight it. Passenger in the car claimed significant neck injuries even though she was fine at the time of the accident. Luckily I had my camera and took lots of pictures, and came back and measured distances, skid mark lengths, etc. ASU has a great criminal justice program. I went over and found an enthusiastic student who hooked me up with textbooks on accident investigation. Did not take long to figure out that my reaction time, considering the blocked view, was above average and that based on the girls skid marks she was 15 mph over the speed limit (35 in a 20 zone) despite what she told the cop. I did not pay the fine, I went to court with photos, a plan showing the distances, etc. and my calculations. Judge asked the cop why he did not take the same measurements and he replied based on his judgement I was clearly in the wrong. Judge dismissed the case, chewed out the cop and I contacted the insurance company. They sued the "injured" passenger and her doctor, who happened to be the father of the driver for fraud.

There you go, awesome job! Being in the autobody industry for 40+ years I have seen such CRAZY **** when it comes to what insurance companies pay, and what they refused I want to puke! We have two in the shop right now, OUT AND OUT fraud, I always look at it as a cop, could I testify in court that this couldn't have happened the way they say it did. VERY often, I have believe without a doubt they are lying, but I couldn't stand up in court with my hand on the Bible and say so, this was not the case. Both these cars, I would put my life on it that they DID NOT happen as they say and there were multiple crashes that caused the damage to their cars. Real quick, one had OBVIOUS damage to the right side caused by the car going up against a building, so obvious it's crazy. Another car did NOT hit this car, this car was driven up against a building or fence or something. So that's the right side, the left side he drove over a curb destroying the wheel and blowing the tire. Then driving on that tire 5-6 miles at least at high speed with the tire completely destructing, ripping the fender liner out of the car and throwing chunks of tire into the engine compartment! We are talking breaking the back of the headlight, ripping the hood release cable out of the car, ripping the air cleaner resonator out of the car. The spare was on the car and the totally destroyed wheel with only the bead of the tire left on the rim was in the trunk. The fender was destroyed by the chunks of tire.

What did he claim? He said he came back to his car parked in a parking lot to see that someone had hit the right side pushing it into a curb and the tire had exploded! After being questioned about this he changed his story to two different claims still claiming that it was hit and run on the right and that he "got a flat" and drove to a gas station where the tire exploded when he filled it!

The insurance company is paying for both of them! I am sorry, they should be refused and he should kicked off the insurance!

But that isn't how it works, they pay it and then ***** about how much our hourly rate is.

Brian
