67, C20 not starting
 

What’s going on guys? Been working this most of the day and am at the same point as where I began. Basically the truck will not start or even turn over. I put the multimeter on the battery and got 12.45, went to the starter and checked the positive connection there and got 12.45. Next I moved to the ignition wire on the starter and I am not sure if I got a solid connection there, it did read zero, like I said not sure if my connection was solid. I traced it down to where a re-wiring connection was done up on the firewall and I decided to cut it and re-connect it. I also went to where the wires connect to the ignition tumblr and the positive wire read a 12.45, I also did a reading on the ignition wire it read zero like it should and once I turned the key the meter read 12.45. I am going to replace the ignition wire from the starter to the ignition tumblr next weekend, looks like crap anyway and I feel it should remove al doubt that is the issue I would love to hear your guys thoughts and suggestions.

BTW, when the battery is hooked up all lights come on and car seems to have the power as if it is going to start.

I also removed the starter and had it tested since I was at my end.

You sure the engine isnt locked up ? Can you turn it over by hand ?

Engine is fine man, it has a fresh rebuilt engine and tranny in it. I think it’s an old wire.

Buy, borrow or make a remote starter switch. If it cranks with the remote, you have good starter mechanics, battery and battery cables.

Old wiring is always on the suspect list.

Don't overlook the possibility that the start contacts on the ignition switch picked now to fail.

Awesome, great advice. My plan was to re-wire the ignition wire from the starter all the way to the ignition switch, but a remote starter switch is a great idea.

BTW, good to get advice from home. I was born in Norman and lived in and around Tulsa prior to joining the Navy some years ago.

Still trying to get this thing going, getting time to work on it is limited to the weekend due to work and family. Below is a pic of the ignition switch, purple wire is the ignition wire running from starter solenoid I put the multi-meter on it and it read 12.45; I placed the point where the clear break is. Based off the looks of the wiring I am thinking of replacing all the wiring at the switch; all looks old and suspicious. What is a way to test to see if my ignition switch is bad? I did purchase a remote starter switch and I will be testing that out here soon.

Those wires need to be cut out and re done with a good crimper.

Is it a automatic are straight drive? Have you check the NSS to see if it's working up on the column?Is this a factory setup are a HEI? :chevy:

I purchased my 67 a few years ago.
I test drove it.
I bought it.
I drove it 40 miles to get home.
I shut it off and then try to restart it (Nothing).
My problem was a bad connection on the black junction block
on the passengers side right beside the battery.
I tighten the wires and it started.
This could be your issue or maybe not.
Worth checking.

From reading on the forums I am tempted to think it could be the NSS. The gear shifter has been relocated to the floor with a B&M throw shifter. I am going to put the starter back in on Saturday and try to start it with the remote starter switch. If that starts I know it is the wiring. If it doesn’t then I am going to the NSS and checking the gear shifter. BYw I do plan on replacing the wiring after I find out the problem.

I got the remote starter switch on and the engine turned. I think I am going to cut the ends by the ignition switch and recrimp them. That is the quickest and easiest thing to do. As for the NSS, I’d like to test the voltage on it, but I do not know where it is.

Anyone know how to remove the wiring harness from the back of the ignition cylinder?

Finally got it out. I’ve seen a lot of guys who hardwire to the back of the switch. What do I need to do to do that? Seems easier.

Hardwired the ignition switch and still nothing. I put the multimeter on the NSS and got no voltage with power or turning the key. I think this maybe my issue. Ordering one here soon.

is your truck originally a manual tranny converted to automatic? if so thre wont be a nss. also mke sure your purple and yellow wires aren't crossed on your starter

that ignition switch looks like its been tapped into at one time. either with an alarm or a breathalyzer. it shouldn't have burnt out the ignition but it could have with bad wiring. did you check your fuses also?
also the terminal connections at the back of the switch, ( switch to the brown plastic terminal piece) might have corrosion. check and clean those also

Hmmm, the ignition switch may have been tapped into but I am unsure. I did order an NSS and it should be here tomorrow. I appreciate all the feedback and plan to let everyone know where I am after I drop the NSS in. I’ll also clean the brown terminal piece also; anything I’ve removed I’ve cleaned even if it wasn’t that dirty.
