64-66 chevy exhaust infront of tires

I am thinking about running my exhaust out infront of the rear tires. Anyone done this and I need pictures.

I used Camaro tips. Brockman Mellowtone mufflers

I had to run my exhaust to the outside of the frame, so I routed the downpipe under the rise in the front of the frame and did a turn out off of the muffler in front of the rear tire. Here are a couple of photos while I was fabricating the passenger side.

My exhaust is routed exactly like vin63's. It works very well this way and there is tons of room.

Re: 64-66 chevy exhaust infront of tires

I too did mine like Vin63 and it did sound good, but ultimately it proved to be too loud for long distance driving. I recently added tailpipes over the axle and straight down which was just enough to quiet it down to where I wanted.
But you know wnat they say, "if it's too loud your too old." I guess I am guilty as charged.

Thanks for the pictures. The last truck is the same color as mine. As for being loud that will be fine with me. I am wanting a hot rod look and sound with this truck. Check out my build thread

racecougar the stance on your truck is BadAss! With those tires & pipes hanging out the side of a SWB truck it looks like one of those Ed Roth Cartoons from the '60s!
Well Done!

http://_0519Right on about the wide tires and stance. I really like the red one as well as the 62. There are not many of these trucks I dont like. Here is the one I am building now

Anyone have sound issues having their exhaust routed this way?
I'm wanting to move my tank to the rear but I don't like how close the pipes would be to the tank.

I had the mufflers under the cab on my 66 and the resonation was horrible at 2000 rpm. Had no sound deadener but I don't think it would have helped much. Assuming you may not have enough room to put them behind the cab and still have the pipes route in front of the tires.

Re: 64-66 chevy exhaust infront of tires

Yeah, It's louder for sure and if your a windows down kind of guy, you hear the sound of half your engine being deflected off of buildings and curbs. I still have a long bed with front of tire outlets on 2 inch pipe, but I personally dont care to hear much from my exhaust at all so I added resonators to my stock style mufflers which helps. On my shortbed I just got sick of it and lopped the pipes off under the cab and re-did the whole thing all the way out the back with 2.25" putting the mufflers under the bed and resonators fore and aft. The tailpipes and rearward resonators run right next to my rear mounted tank and I have run the truck very hard on very hot days and never found the tank too hot to touch.

This isn’t in front of the tires, but when you go over the differential, you will be going to outside of your frame and most rear tanks are between the frame rails. I will finish with my outlets in back of the tires after getting over my soon to be built new differential...plenty of room between tank and exhaust

Here's a pic of how close mine are. You'll notice I had to rotate the resonators slightly off center to get a bit more breathing room. (Remember, the flanges on the tank sides stick out a good bit from the tank wall so at least the fuel itself is further in). Those rearward resonators were an afterthought so I was just happy they fit there at all.

I made a mock-up and had my tank built locally, it fits between the rails so your resonators would be about 2-21/2 “ from the tank wall, I also will be turning the exhaust out behind the tire, I have a stainless roll pan , I don’t want anything below it. My tank is about 7” in the rear and slopes to 10” in the front
