HELP water pump replacement 2004 chevy hd 6.0 gas
 

Anyone have the instructions on replacement? Need help if you have the info.

It is a piece of cake but there is a good chance you do not need a water pump but only the two gaskets. I see a lot of people waste money on pumps when they only needed $20 worth of gaskets so verify the pump is actually leaking out of the weep hole before you buy one.

These instructions make it to be much more intimidating of a job than it really is. Should take no more than 30 to 45 minutes. Long story short, drain the radiator, remove the upper fan shroud, serp belt, fan blade, radiator hoses and you are there. This is also a perfect time to replace the serp belts…especially the A/C belt.

Here is GM’s version


1. Drain the cooling system.
2. Loosen the air cleaner outlet duct clamps at the following locations:
• Throttle body
• Mass airflow/intake air temperature (MAF/IAT) sensor
4. Remove the radiator inlet hose clip from the outlet duct.
5. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
6. If necessary, remove the engine sight shield.
7. Remove the radiator vent inlet hose from the radiator hose clips.
8. Reposition the inlet hose clamp at the water pump.
9. Remove the inlet hose from the water pump.
10. Remove the fan blade.
11. Remove the accessory drive belt.
12. Reposition the outlet hose clamp at the water pump.
13. Remove the outlet hose from the water pump.
14. Reposition the surge tank outlet hose clamp at the water pump.
15. Remove the surge tank outlet hose from the water pump.
16. Reposition the heater inlet hose clamp at the water pump.
17. Remove the heater inlet hose from the water pump.
18. Remove the water pump bolts.
19. Remove the water pump and gaskets.
20. Discard the water pump gaskets.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the water pump and NEW gaskets.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
2. Install the water pump bolts.
Tighten
1. Tighten the bolts a first pass to 15 N•m (11 lb ft).
2. Tighten the bolts a final pass to 30 N•m (22 lb ft).

3. Install the heater inlet hose to the water pump.
4. Position the heater inlet hose clamp at the water pump.
5. Install the surge tank outlet hose to the water pump.
6. Position the surge tank outlet hose clamp at the water pump.
7. Install the outlet hose to the water pump.
8. Position the outlet hose clamp at the water pump.
9. Install the accessory drive belt.
10. Install the fan blade.
11. Install the inlet hose to the water pump.
12. Position the inlet hose clamp at the water pump.
13. Install the engine vent inlet hose to the radiator hose clips.
14. If necessary, install the engine sight shield.

Important: Align the arrow at the throttle body end of the duct with the throttle body attaching stud.
15. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
16. Install the radiator inlet hose clip to the outlet duct.
17. Tighten the air cleaner outlet duct clamps at the following locations:
• Throttle body
• MAF/IAT sensor
19. Tighten
Tighten the clamps to 7 N•m (62 lb in).
