Dual Snorkel Intake
Anyone ever try to adapt an '83(?) - '85 Camero dual snorkel intake to a truck. I would like to adapt one into my truck. I do not have the original Q-jet. Instead I am using an Eldelbrock 1406 / 600 CFM carb on the original 305 CI engine. I would like to know the dimensions on the dual snorkel intake. Total height, width, and circumference. What is the size of the air cleaner? How flat is the snorkel on the bottom? Can it clear an Eldelbrock carb fuel linkage and fuel intake lines using a spacer? What is the diameter length of the hole on the bottom portion of the snorkel? Anyone have available for sale? Dealer wants $185.00!! They can't give me the dimensions because they do not have one in stock and no else in town has one. I sure don't want to order one then not have it fit my carb.

Well guys,
I still have the page on the dual snorkel conversion but I won't have it on my truck for very much longer. I broke down and bought a Ram Air Box. Ever since I seen these things I have been wanting one. They are not cheap but what is in this crazy performance world we all hang out in? I ordered it today, should be here in a week or two. I'll have some pics of it on my site sometime there after. BTW, there wasn't anything wrong with my homemade one. I just wanted the Ram Air Box mainly for looks. Thanks for the RAM AIR link. After I receive some information from them, I probably order one too. Still don't know how I'm fit the tubes but I'm sure I'll have to cut holes in the new radiator support. Well, it looks like I won't be ordering the RAM AIR box. The original radiator support does have an opening the driver side to hook up a dual snorkel system. My new '89 - '91 radiator support does not have any opening for a dual snorkel hookup. I guess the '89 - '91 burbs, jimmy's and blazers have the air inlet located on the passenger side fender. Guess I'll just have to go with a crowl hood. Hard part is find a metal one to fit my truck.

Thanks for the link. I'm interested in finding a steel Ram Air sytle hood. A ram air hood with the air intake like the Cobra, Cameros, Firebirds and similiar cars would look better than just a raised cowl. I just like the meaner look with the air induction direct instead of in the back of the hood. I may just purchase a steel induction scoop and have it welded on the hood. For looks or function. For function, the cowl version is better because of the presurized area at the base of the windshield/cowl. You would have to isolate the air cleaner from the underhood air for it to work properly. Being a flat vertical hood, the snorkel/Ram type would be less optimal. They do look cool though.

The other thing you could do is stack 2 stock air cleaner housings on top of each other. You would of course need an extra long stud for the top of the carb.

Guess it's proof that time and patience pays off with hot rods. Gerardo did eventually get his ram air box and even built a pretty sweet bumper inlet setup for it too! |

Strange, about 2 Hours ago I decided to build my own dual snorkel air cleaner. I got about half way done and decided to call it a night and check on the site for some new post and this one was at the top. and 12 years old to boot. Must have some thing to do with "the space-time continuum"

If stock appearance and sneaky is more your thing then you don't need all the flashy intake stuff.
Here's mine. I did this maybe 15-18 years ago. I have a complete dual snorkle air cleaner setup from a 305HO camaro but I preferred to keep the stock stuff and modify a bit. I simply grabbed an extra air cleaner with the same snorkle from the junk yard, along with another intake hose and the plastic connector that clips onto the core support. The nice part is that most of these core supports are made with the intake hose holes already there on both sides (mine does) so it's just as simple as hooking it up. I drilled the spot welds for the snorkle on the junk yard air cleaner, measured and cut the hole on my air cleaner. Spot welded the snorkle on, did a little touch up paint at the spot welds. Luckily the junk yard snorkle had about the same "patina" as my air cleaner assembly so it matches perfectly and looks as though it belongs there without having to paint the entire assembly ;) Most people look at this and don't even notice that it's not a factory setup, only a very few keen eyes have even caught it. (not that I open the hood for everyone though :lol:) I also removed all the baffling inside the air cleaner that surrounds both the air filter and surrounds the throat of the carb so I get unrestricted fresh outside airflow. http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/x...1/P9110003.jpg |

I'm sure yours works good as is, but there is a taller lid and filter that fits that base (about twice as tall) you could get at a junkyard cheap as well. Could get a little more air flow and filtering area for that big block. |
