what would be the best coating to put over the back of the cab I have it primed now,I will be installing the bed before I get it painted,Because I have to save money for paint and it may be a year or two before I achieve that.Thanks Jeff

How did you do the back of the cab...did you just scuff and prime over the original paint?

Yes it had the original paint I sanded with 80 grit and then 180 then 320 and then primed

I dont know about Rust-Oleum filler primer....but if your original paint was only scuffed it should be fine...if you had sanded to bare metal youd need epoxy primer on it...

A filler primer is too porous and will not seal out the elements. You need about three coats of epoxy primer.

If what you used is what I think it is those rattle can primers are fine for home projects not your truck you can probably wash it off with a little lacquer thinner don’t take a chance

Good observation. It never hit me we were dealing with spray bombs here....


The primer used does not seal, and anything sprayed on top of it will likely cause lifting (adhesion) issues as any solvents will soften or wrinkle the primer. If you don't have the option of spray equipment, find a good epoxy primer and use a low knap roller, or brush, etc. to provide the application coverage needed. At the end of the day it will get blocked out before you topcoat with anything, and in the meantime it has the ability to seal out moisture.

The best thing you could do for it without starting all over this time is to paint it. Get a gallon of Rustoleum and paint it.

When you are ready and financed to paint it correctly, you'll need to start over back to original paint and or bare steel.

Rattle can products are not a good idea for proper finish and corrosion resistance.

If you don't paint it, you will have a rusty project in no time!

I really know next to nothing about paint & body work, but the most common two words I hear from the experts are "Epoxy Primer"...so if you are just talking back of cab and other random spots you may consider getting a couple cans of true 2k epoxy primer in a spray can. $15-20 and it has a nice adjustable spray pattern valve. Search on line.

Hey guys I sanded down to metal and applied 2k epoxy primer to the back after replacing the cab corners and thanks for all the replies and advice
