Filler neck grommet

I read all the old threads on installing the grommet without pulling the tank.
Soaked in warm soapy water, sprayed with wd40 and lubed it up with vaseline.
It is like trying to put ten pounds of taters in a five pound sack.
No luck.
Any other tricks or techniques?
Thanks

Re: Filler neck grommet

Hi, I’m pretty new to this board but I just replaced the grommet on my C/10 on Saturday. I used a thin premixed spray soap, I believe it was “Simple Green” but 409 or similar would work also. Sprayed the grommet with the soap and started working the grommet into the cab and also onto thriller neck. I also used a very dull old screwdriver to work the grommet into the cab, a little at a time and also to work/push the grommet further onto the filler neck. When the soap appeared to dry up and the grommet started to stick, I’d spray more simple green into the lips of the grommet. Take your time and have patience, it will go!

I’m looking at this job too. First I have to pull the tank.

Right now I’m getting ready to order a new tank. Any one had a great experience with a supplier, their price, shipping, etc?

Will follow the advice above and have a buddy on hand to make the swap. Have noticed that there is a fairly inexpensive tool available to release the guts out of the tank. Seem to recall fighting with a couple screw drivers to get in there one time a long time ago. Any help is much appreciated.

Have watched this forum for some time but joined today to get my ‘70 C/10 back on the road. Thanks in advance.

I use a plastic pushing tool, you need to get one little bit of the lip fully through the seated, then work it 'round bit by bit .

The grommet is supposed to be very supple ~ cheap Chinese crappo ones that rot and crack in a year, are often very hard and stiff when new .

Bought mine from Brothers, pretty stiff.

Re: Filler neck grommet

I purchased mine from Classicheartbeat on eBay item # (302819124387) for my 72 C10. It was a little expensive at $17.95 but it has a 100% money back guaranteed or warrantee for 10 years. I just installed it last week with a couple of plastic tools. I spent that much in hopes it won't crack or split. Every year I had to change the cheap ones, hope this one is better. I'll find out in time.

Well ;

I looked at the one I installed about three years ago to - day, it's still fairly pliable but has a lot of tiny cracks so I guess it wasn't a quality item .

That is where I purchased from recommendations here on the forum. I just haven't got it installed yet.

I have not tried this but what if you wrap some heavy duty string of some sort around the inside of the grommet and pull it thru the back as you work it from the outside at the same time. I thought of this after watching a you tube video of someone installing a new windshield in a c-10. I need to replace mine again after installing a cheap one, I also bought the lifetime warranty one from Classic Heartbeat. I was able to get mine in without pulling the tank using a dull plastic scraper...it was tuff though. I almost pulled the tank.

I didn't put anything on the one I purchased. It was very rubbery and I got it in with just two plastic tools.

there are 2 different filler neck diameters on these trucks and a lot can change in 40 years...so trying to install the grommet for a skinny neck on a thick one would be damn near impossible

Who makes the best one and where did you get it.
I just picked up a 70 GMC Custom Camper and it needs one.

I’ve got wes’s (classic heartbeat) Grommit for my truck. Very nice piece. I used Chinese rubber on my 57 and it’s been cracking in different places for a couple years now. I reallly don’t think this one is going to crack.

First I have heard this.

Wes Hepp @ http://www.classicheartbeat.com/ has helped to produce the best quality grommet.
Mine went on easily in minutes.
Use some personal waterless lubrication :) and a non marring plastic push rod.

I got mine from Wes, but won't install it until after the truck is painted. I read somewhere to use silicone grease on rubber products (like hoses). I hope it also works on grommets.

Hi Duke, yes, I got mine from classic heartbeat pickup parts on eBay. I checked it out and they have them. The eBay item # is 302860728432. $17.95 but it comes with a 10 year guarantee. I don't know yet if they are the best, I just put mine in but for that price they better be the best..lol. Also no problem putting it in, just use some plastic tools. Good luck.
