GMC Trim Levels Q?

What's the exact lowdown on how the GMC levels ran through the years from 67-72? I have never been 100% sure so I'll keep my mouth shut and listen to what you all know. The emblems can be misleading. I want to know how which model was labeled as well, such as emblems on the glovebox and fenders,as well as SPID. In '67 the Super Custom was the Chevy CST equivalent. It had it's own badge, but it only said Custom on a unique fender badge. The Custom was equal to the Chevy Custom and had it's own Custom script on the fender. Sierra Grandes came out in '69,before Chevy Cheyennes and Cheyenne Supers. Did Sierras come out in '69? Were base 71/72s called Customs or have no name still? Why do some on;y show V-Six or V-Eight on the fender badge? Some GMCs had a Custom Script on the door. Which ones? Lets get all this straight through the years, including what badge/emblem and where.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Dont know how high it ranks in class but my 71 is a Sierra grande and has custom emblems above the door handles, sierra grande on the bed sides, custom on the glove box lid, and the spid says custom sport truck and Sierra grande. My 70 gmc is very low optioned and only has the gmc on the fender

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

I'm not 100% sure as the trucks get older, but with 1971, 1972:
Sierra Grande = Cheyenne Super
Sierra = Cheyenne
? = Custom/Deluxe
? = Custom
Longhorn = Longhorn (? any takes on this guys?)
Again, I'm not sure about the mid-lower levels of the GMC but prior to the Cheyenne Stuff...I'm pretty sure the top level Chevy was the CST (Custom Sport Truck) Option.
Maybe a few of the other members can help fill in the blanks.

The truck my brother has that we call 'Charlie' is a 70 Sierra Grande Custom Sport Truck (both listed on the SPID) big block. The fender emblem says GMC 1500 V-EIGHT, Custom over the door handle and Sierra Grande on the bed sides.

I only know a little about 67's based on what you've stated before and looking at a few trucks in these parts. I have noticed that the 1967 "custom" models seem to rarely have the custom script emblem. Too much stuff (Eric) has only seen one GMC with those ;) The maroon truck is another custom I have that doesn't appear to have had any emblems but it has been repainted. I am thinking they either didn't have emblems later on or they adopted the same emblem as the super custom as shown in the teal truck pic. Those emblems are the most common emblem I've seen on 67 GMC's. Most 67 GMC's never had a SPID so that makes things even more confusing. Grilles in 67 as far as I know were painted for base model and chrome for custom or super custom. This leads me to believe the maroon trucks grille was replaced. I think buddies were standard in the super custom only.Need to look at my 67 dealer brochure when I get home.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

In 67 the base models had no fender emblem,Custom had the script fender emblem, and Super Customs had the vertical rectangle fender badge with Custom in script and two black bars. I don't know about anything on any of the glovebox doors. Has anyone ever seen a Super Custom glovebox emblem in any year? Don't they get the GMC Custom badge?

Glovebox emblems varied by the years.

1967 Super customs and Customs had the same "GMC" glovebox emblem shown in 1st pic of blue truck (courtesy of 75GMC454). Also notice how the GMC door panels have horizontal lines as opposed to the vertical imprints in the chevys.

1969 Super Custom had "GMC Custom" shown in 2nd pic (green truck). This truck was also unusual in that fender badge in last pic did not say super custom. CST is on SPID.

Mine is a 1970 cutom camper sierra grande, it has original paint never been restored. Never being restored I am 99% sure everything as far as emblems and such to be true. That being said here how mine is layed out.

1970 gmc sierra grande custom camper 133" wheelbase

sierra grande emblems on bedsides

custom camper script emblems on doors

gmc custom on glovebox

2500 v-eight on fenders

Spid shows:
z17 sierra grande truck
z81 camper name plate
z84 custom sport truck

So,their is mine

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

My 71 sierra grande has the gmc 2500 v8 on the fenders and the spid has the custom sport truck. My truck is an original 1 owner too so I'm sure none are missing.

Also was wondering why my glove box lid and instrument cluster are a different color than the rest of the dash. The dash matches the rest of the truck in med. bronze but the cluster and glove box lid are a lighter brown. Is this right?

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

Maybe 2500 and up didn't indicate trim level on the fender badge , I have seen "sierra" and "sierra grande" on fender badges on the 1500's. As I recall I have never seen the above trim levels on a 1970 gmc though.

Might be a similar situation on the glove box door with "GMC custom", "sierra", and "sierra grande".

My sierra grande also has a chrome insturment cluster painted blue like the interior. I have seen 1971, 1972 with wood grain on the cluster as well as the glovebox. Never seen the wood grain on anything original ion the 1970 's and older. Let me know.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

My SPID in my 1972 GMC Super Custom only lists "Custom Deluxe Equipment". What would that include?

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...8&d=1308607911

It also lists Chrome Hubcaps. But when I got the truck it had white ones on it. Never checked to see if the wite caps are chrome caps painted white.

My truck also has cruise control... but it must have been a dealer installed option. Since it's not listed on the SPID.

Mine look to be the same color brown as the ones in the lighter blue truck posted above. You can kinda see it in this pic.

And it's hard to tell in this pic but my 70 has a little darker color on the glovebox and cluster compared to the dash.
http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/...4/cd511ab3.jpg
Was this done to match the rest of the interior?

All say the samething on my 72 except the bed. Don't know if someone change bed at one point. It appears to be original, unless someone replaced with blue bed. Blue inside and underneath.

Re: GMC Trim Levels Q?

One thing GMC did across the board was to paint the dash bezel and glove box the color of the interior. I'm thinking, although Sierra Grandes started before Cheyenne Supers, they didn't get the woodgrain dash until '71. I'm wondering if only 71/72s say the trim level in the fender badge. Across the board,a Custom got the same thing as a Chevy Custom...mid-level until Sierra Grande came out, when Super Custom became mid-level. I know in 71/72 Super Custom was equivalent to Custom Deluxe. I assume in '70 Super Custom was equivalent to a Chevy Custom...once the Sierra Grande came out.
To make things confusing,GMC called their 133" Wideside a Custom Camper, not Longhorn. You could have the Custom Camper pkg option on any 2500 or 3500. So,a 133" Custom Camper could be a Custom Camper Custom Camper with any trim level. I have fender badges that are 3500 Custom Camper. I have no idea what they would have come on. I have seen 127" 2500 Custom Campers that had the door script and 133" 2500 with the door script.

Here's another glove box door emblem:

The trim level in the fender badge is 71-72 only, 68-70 was V-EIGHT in the 1/2 tons.

My 72 Custom Camper has 2500 Super Custom fender badges, Custom Camper over the door handle and nothing on the glovebox door, no holes so must not have come with a badge. Curious.
Also has the Z62 Custom Deluxe Equipment listed on the SPID.

Did you notice we have two 70 big block SPIDS shown here, one says 396 and one says 400. Go figure.

This may be true in the south but in Canada 67's i believe they were black and grey and so was the glove box door. I have had mulitple 67's gmc's and they were all like this. I have a 68 and 70 gmc and they are painted the same. Here are some pic's of a Canadian 67 GMC super custom i had till last year. only thing i added was the tilt column and clock wasn't original. i also robbed the buddies out of it for my short bed project.
