1966 CHEVROLET suburban engine question
I want to verify the date on the engine block of the 327 that came out of my 1966 Suburban. Casting # on rear of block is 3858174. The other casting numbers I find are on the back of the block which would be under the flywheel. H5 174. Is this the date or do I need to look somewhere else for the date? Thanks, Jim

Re: 1966 CHEVROLET suburban engine question
The casting date is cast into the block on the passenger side of the block, above where the flywheel is. It does consist of a letter which corresponds to the month of the year, then the day of the month and then the year as a single digit.

Here is a photo of the back of the block. Any ideas on date?

Re: 1966 CHEVROLET suburban engine question
That looks like it is behind the flywheel.....I do not see any date code there. The date code is located where I previously said.
This is on a big block but a small block casting numbers and date codes are in the same location. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=773368 |

Re: 1966 CHEVROLET suburban engine question
Does that say B 4 6 ? If so, the block was cast on February 4th 1966. The casting number does show to be a 1964-67 327. What is the stamping on the front pad?

Re: 1966 CHEVROLET suburban engine question
Yes B 4 6 . I will check stamped number on front.

Re: 1966 CHEVROLET suburban engine question
So far so good. Block cast on Feb 4, final assembly on Feb 9. At Flint Engine Plant on Bristol Road, which is gone now.

Re: 1966 CHEVROLET suburban engine question
It does have the plugs in the exhaust manifolds where the A.I.R. system used to tie in.
