84 C10 Project
Thought I would start a thread for the new project truck. So far, I haven't done much, except for new hinges, door weather stripping and just cleaning up the truck. The body is a little rough, but my plan is to make a "budget" daily driver out of it. Nothing over the top, but something I can cruise and have fun with.
This is my second C10. Here is a picture of the one I had ack in high school. Excuse the old school 15's. :lol:Thats all I could afford at the time. Old one: http://www.tustindesignco.com/Misc/C10/old.jpg Plans: 20's / 22's Static Drop (Maybe Bagged) Built small block Primer Black with a red stripe Here is what it looks like now. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7953703_n.jpg https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7923935_n.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project
Started to work on the basics, by installing new hinges and door seals.
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._8103287_n.jpg Whole at it, decided to shave the drip rails. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5423959_n.jpg Replaced the core support. The one that came on the truck was for a single headlight setup, and when they updated the front end to a dual headlight, they didn't change the core support. Some people.... I have decided to hold off on the interior and paint until I get the new engine in. I am going to do a simple 350 with some vortec heads and mild cam. |

Re: 84 C10 Project
Made some progress this weekend. Pulled and will now start to cleanup and paint the engine bay. Since this is a budget build, I am going to build up the 305 that's in it. The 350 I had, needed to be rebuilt (4-bolt main), so now I am selling it.
Here are some pictures. What a mess, but it won't be for long. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...8_241882_n.jpg https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5094402_n.jpg https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2626312_n.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project
Nice project. I have a soft spot for 84s. One question though. If the 305 and 350 both needed to be rebuilt, why nit rebuild the 350 instead of the 305?

Re: 84 C10 Project
I am not going to rebuild the 305. I am just putting vortec heads on it, and replace basically everything but the rotating assembly. The 350 needs to be rebuilt and have a new rotating assembly, etc.
I will put new heads on the 305, new oil pump and pickup, water pump, etc. By doing this, i am essentially saving the $1000 on rebuilding the 350. |

Oh ok now I see.

Re: 84 C10 Project
i like the paint scheme you want. Are you going to leave the bed red?
|
Re: 84 C10 Project
I didn't plan on leaving it red, but now that you mention it, it may not look that bad. Something to think about it. I am also considering painting it a copper color, like what comes on the new vettes

Re: 84 C10 Project
Nice project
|
Re: 84 C10 Project
Started to paint the engine bay. It is just some simple rattle can, but it does look a lot cleaner. Still have the other side to do.
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4140923_n.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project
Finished up the other side and still have some left to do, but I am getting closer. Nothing show quality, but good enough for a budget driver.
I have now come across a 383 stroker that I will be dropping in. Once I pick it up I will post some pictures, until then I want to get everything ready to drop in. Anybody know of a decent converter to use that wont break the bank? I am bolting it up to a 700r4. |
Re: 84 C10 Project
Picked up a 383 stroker for the truck, and started to clean it up some.
The engine has Dart 2.08 heads, Holley 750. Not sure on the cam, but the previous owner said is has some lump to it. If next weekend is clear weather, I will be dropping it in. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4319591_n.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project
Those are some pretty tall valve covers, roller rockers hiding under them maybe ? What kind of power numbers are you thinking to get out of it ? Mind if I ask how much you scored it for ?
|
Re: 84 C10 Project
The previous owner said it should be around 450, but he never actually dynoed it. I paid $2,000 for what you see there plus alternator, power steering and brackets. I couldn't pass it up.

Re: 84 C10 Project
Got the engine dropped in over the weekend. Everything went together smooth for the most part, but I do need to make a throttle bracket for the holley carb. Can't wait to see how it sounds and runs.
It goes to the exhaust place on Saturday to put dual flowmasters with dumps before the axle. And yes, I know, I need to get electric fans. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7135799_n.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project

Re: 84 C10 Project
:metal: nice job!!

Re: 84 C10 Project
Thanks guys. I just got it running this last weekend and just have to dial it in. I will take some video when I get a chance.
Menace, great project.... I am following your build thread. |
Re: 84 C10 Project
wow! looking good. I am gonna follow you!
I am wondering. Here in the Netherlands we do not have strict SMOG regulations for oldtimers. We only have to meet a certain CO in de exhaust. So I saw that the can (in the red cirkel) is still connected to on of the vacuum connections on my carb. What does it do and can I loose it and close the connection on the carb? http://lh4.ggpht.com/_i4YwYZutwgk/TO...trange_can.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project
To be honest, I am not sure. I do know that it is a vacuum canister, but do not know the effects if you were to remove only it from your truck and leave all other smog stuff. I have removed all smog equipment from my truck.

Re: 84 C10 Project
Alright, well she she is alive. I still have some fine tuning to work out, such as timing. I have already ordered a mechanical advance kit for the HEI. Startup and idle is good.
Right now, it has a big hesitation off when getting on the throttle, and pops and snaps. I think it is advances way too much, too early. |
Re: 84 C10 Project
What engine paint did you use. I was thinking about doing mine in those same colors and really like the way yours looks! Great job man!

Re: 84 C10 Project
wow! youre engine looks really sweet! I love the stealthy black you gave it.
but it sounds like you are starting it all the time, like it is not running on its own. Youre ignition timing is an easy option/solution. unscrew the screw under the distributor about 1/4. Then start your engine en rotate the ignition either way. If it gets worse, rotate the other way. you should hear the engine starting to run better. I recently did this myself and it is real easy to hear. If you do not have a timing light, you can set the ignition yourself by ear. almost forgot. before you start your engine, unplug the vacuum connection to the distributor and plug it. after adjusting it you can connect it again. goodluck |

I used the high heat paint from Oreilly's. I can't remember the brand, but I will check when I go back there next. I know the color was called "Cast-Iron", but it came out with a greenish tone. |

The thing in the red circle is a charcoal canister.

Re: 84 C10 Project
Just noticed you're a fellow OC guy. Looks like this truck is coming along nicely! I'll look forward to givin' a big thumbs up when I see you cruisin' PCH sometime.
Keep up the good work dude! Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: 84 C10 Project
Been a while since I posted or even worked on my truck. But here are some updates. I am planning on getting it painted this summer, so I finally got the new doors (with full power) hung, and aligned.
I want to paint it that copper color that comes on the corvettes. SO, bodywork will start soon. I need to find a new bed, and a new hood. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2480944_n.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project
Found a bed on craigslist yesterday. Straight with no rust and already has the fuel doors shaved, with a opening in the bed for the filler neck.
Got it for $220 with the tailgate. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3186313_n.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project
not bad
|
Re: 84 C10 Project
I think once the bed is off, I am going to airbag the rear and prime the rear of the cab.
|
Re: 84 C10 Project
I ordered some of the bag components..... well enough to bag it and use schrader valves for now. I still need tanks, valves and compressors. I just wanted to get the bags and brackets on while the bed was off.
I ordered the brackets & c-notch from KP Components and will be using Slam Specialties SS-7 bags. Should be here all next week. I am keeping everything under the bed. |
Re: 84 C10 Project
great progress man,.. truck is gonna look really nice all bagged looking foward to se more progress man keep the pics coming and great job so far.....
|
Re: 84 C10 Project
Thanks. I also want to repaint the frame when the bed is off, but I am also considering the POR15. I have never used it, but the end result looks good and seems easy to do.
What would you all recommend? |
Re: 84 C10 Project
I like it alot!
|
Re: 84 C10 Project
Parts came in from KP Components. Can't wait to get the bed off and start on the suspension and cleaning up the frame.

Re: 84 C10 Project
Got the bed pulled and ready to c-noth and airbag the rear. I am looking to POR15 the rear frame, but have read mixed reviews.
What do you guys thing of using that stuff? Does it adhere Ok? How is the satin black color? Does it lay down consistently? What is the best way to apply? https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4310220_n.jpg https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3231205_n.jpg |
Re: 84 C10 Project
Got the c-notch in. Next will be to weld it up, and start making the crossmember for the bag brackets. I still have not decided on how I will be painting the frame, whether it be POR15 or some sort of chassis paint from Eastwood or Summit. I will be wire wheeling to remove all the paint first though.
