1985 single cab 1 ton dually manual trans. Is transfer case a 205?

Up here in Hailey, ID. and its too dang cold and too much snow on the ground to crawl underneath and look. My guess is a 205. Trying to do some homework, thanks!

Could be, but more likely an NP208.

Scratch that.. civilian 1 ton likely NP205, military NP208. That's what I'm thinking.

All 1 tons in the 80s had the 205. Military is different, but the duallys did get it too. If it doesn't have a 205 it was swapped in.

It should be a np205,You can take a picture of the shifter in the cab,The shifter is different between a np208 and np205.

They all came with them. however, I have castrated several k30s and resold as k20s. What they had 30 years ago may not be what they have now.

That's guys, I have a SM465 with a Gear Vendors overdrive unit in the truck, the GV keeps blowing the fuse, I think the solenoid is bad.

Why did the military have 208's? Is it because of the lower ratio?

Re: 1985 single cab 1 ton dually manual trans. Is transfer case a 205?

Potentially, although you can shift 205s into 4wd on the fly, I think 208s are lil easier. But don't know the "real" reason. Why military intelligence is the biggest oxy moron....

The military blazer used the np208 so maybe they wanted the pickups the same so they will interchange and have parts easier.

It was probably GMs choice. The military usually starts with a concept to fill a need. The vendor produces a vehicle that fits the criteria. Then the Army takes your vehicle, weapon or whatever, to the proving grounds and they thrash it. If it lives they order a whole bunch and you get rich. So I guess the 208 survived the proving grounds. But of course we all know the CUCVs did not stand the test of time for Military abuse.

He's looking for a quick id without freezing. We can go on and on about the differences between the 2 cases.

Yes, now we need to turn the conversation to getting him some foul weather gear, so he can get under the truck, we want pics/info. And on the GV too lets not forget.

I just got a Christmas idea for 57NapCo! He needs one of these. Good for cold plus, it's orange so wife won't run him over in the driveway!

Merry Christmas 57NapCo!

Fly and drive number 25 +/-

Just got home, 1900 miles...no issues. I spun that ol big Block pretty tight going 70 mph for a bit. In the interest of getting home, I pulled it back to 60-65, 8-10 mpg :metal:

1985 GMC 1 ton single cab dually 4X4, factory air, stock big block, sm465, 4:11's, GV overdrive unit (not working for trip), no rust, 122,000 miles... seems possible. Bumps and bruises ah plenty.

I am interested in the nuances of the GV, with the 465/205 setup, when you get it running. I am thinking about maybe getting one. I only know of people that have them. But I don't personally know anyone that runs one. I kind of want one, but without getting in a vehicle with one, not sure about the bucks just yet.

It is a great looking truck and it is in for a summer-hot-weather wake up call in Texas.
