Do you have a 1972 Plaid Suburban?

4 Attachment(s)
REVISED
Many people know about the Highlander Plaid seat trim option on both Chevrolet and GMC conventional light trucks.

However in an attempt to reach out to those who don't know I am asking people who are not sure, to please check the trim code/s of their truck/s. Often the seat covers have been replaced leaving few clues beyond white door panels (again often changed) and seat belts with black dash pad, column and carpet.

So if you could, please let us know if you have (or just found!) a "Hidden Highlander"

The codes to look for are below.
Also just in case SPID reading is new to you the code may have leading and trailing numbers even letters. Reading between the lines may be needed.

Examples 613, _ 613_ _, 613_ _

As far as the SPID description goes, generally you will see "CUSTOM TRIM COMBINA" or the COLOR followed by "...HIGHLANDER P"

This thread is body style specifc so if you have several different body styles please check the other forums for the specific trim codes as applicable. Not trying to cross post this, just touch with all who may have a Highlander.

Suburbans
Custom Deluxe Z62 mandatory option
Avocado 647
Blue 642
Gray 639
Orange 651

REVISED
In addition to the Highlander plaid trim your vehicle may ALSO have a Promo Package code.
These bundled options with the plaid trim for a cost savings in three packages "A", "B" and "C"
On the SPID they are coded:
YG6
YG7
YG8

Promo package codes and approximate savings over individual option costs.

A= YG6 Plaid Trim, Special Wheelcovers C10 (PA1) or
Chrome Hubcaps K5 (K10-20 ?), C20-30 (PO3), Chrome Front Bumper (and rear on Suburban or Blazer), Upper Bodyside Molding (belt, pickups only), Door Edge Guards and Below Eye-Line Mirrors (DG4 on Pickups/Suburbans and DF2 on Blazers). A $94.50 savings.

B= YG7 (includes A) Adds Turbo-Hydramatic Trans., Power Steering and Tilt. A $178.50 savings.

C= YG8 (includes A and B) Adds A/C and Tint. A $260.50 savings.

Finally if you have a lower bodyside molding please indicate the insert color (Woodgrained or Black).

Found a GMC that is claimed to be a 10K mile original.
Anyone know of it or the auction it was sold through?

I had an orange 72 chevy Burban, factory 402, ac, tilt, etc.... It had the orange plaid interior. Still have it but it's my parts truck when I find my builder. I'll see if I can get a pic of the spid.

Thanks for the pictures! The spoilers were intended to redirect airflow on station wagons and keep the rear window clean. Very period just not sure how effective given the location right behind the deep drip rail. As I recall the overhead style across the top of the roof worked pretty good though. They were offered on the later Subs.

Suburban's with the highlander option look killer. I think it because most of us truck guys are used to long bed rugged work trucks when we think of highlanders. But suburban's are pleasure cruising vehicles. Add to that multiple seats with loud fabric; it just doesn't get cooler than that.

Love to see pictures...

Sorry I don't have the SPID for it. While not exactly "correct" on a number of details it presents well the Highlander trim. But I do have several more pictures including a fanciful plaid spare tire cover.

Yours does appear to be similarly optioned but the BBC is a very nice bonus touch!

Thanks...just posted on another "help" thread that you were on...I'm just not seeing the highlander "options" on the SPID...clue me in on this one. I know it is a highlander as I have "part" of the original seat covers left and the truck has only changed hands 2 times outside of family members since new.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Suburban?

Rest assured your trim code 642 Suburban is a Blue Plaid Highlander.
Being a Highlander Trim upgrade it will have the Highlander goodies like the plaid and black carpet but none of the Promo Package options were included.
All other options on your Suburban (other than the Z62 Custom Deluxe) were free choice. This is why your Sub was built with the base mirrors and not the DG4s "included" with Promo Package A or higher as an example.

While everyone's idea of "cooler" is subjective (from really cool to WTF) here is one of mine you might like.

While not originally part of the concept here for a phantom K30/3500 panel truck, the 72 Highlander trim would be great to offset the 505 Dark Green paint. Either Avocado or Orange plaid on a bench seat or even the Blazer's buckets.

I'll post up some pictures when I get a chance to get them. I'll warn you...she is REALLY ugly right now. The green GMC fenders and yellow hood do nothing for her! I had the truck painted 10+ years ago...did it on a budget just to get it all covered...and didn't do the roof white. My brother-in-law, the producer of the GMC front end due to a wreck and subsequent "putting it back together" also stuck in a different interior. Thankfully I've got most of the original parts. I'm probably going to have to dye a set of panels white for the inside as I have no idea where the door panels went when he did the change out.

The suburban is in line for work, but she is pretty far back. I've got a frame swap on my '49 panel and then have to get my '50 pickup running again. After that it is time to work on the suburban. I purposely put it on the back burner as I've got to decide just how I want to approach the repairs I've got to do!

A few years ago I bought this BB original Highlander Burb but it was too rusty for me to deal with so I resold it. The 80's buckets were in it when I bought it.
