Okey..Thanks....it will help me to have a picture.....I am not sure at all cause no numbers are matching. My 292's number matched right up...so....but anyhow I'll keep an eye pealed. :chevy:

The problem is that the 230 and 250 shared a block, so the casting numbers will often be the same for a 230 and a 250. Besides measuring the stroke, a 230 has flat top pistons with valve reliefs and the 250 uses a dished piston.

IIRC, the last number in the code cast below the rear pushrod/side cover is the last digit of the year it was cast. That, along with other clues as to the era, may help determining which engine you have. 1966 was the first year for the 250 AFAIK.

As an example, the 230 pictured on my page. The truck is a '64. The block #is 3854036, which is a '62-'76 230/250 chevy/olds/Pontiac block according to the inliners.org list. (There seems to be debate on how accurate the list is, but I'm not going to go into that.) The last number of the date code is a 4, so it could be a '64 or a '74 block. The engine has an early head that was cast without the provisions for adding the A.I.R. emissions BS, the early style script valve cover, and appears to have never been orange. So, it logically would very likely be the correct '64 230.


I remember writing up a page on general inline six stuff like that, but I guess I scrapped it. Maybe I should write something up on it again...

Here is my 1963 C50 cattle hauler, it was used to transport cattle and horses until it wouldn’t pass CA Smog so was parked to rust away back in 2001 at my neighbor’s ranch.
Being a 60-66 freak I had my eye on it for a while and finally asked my neighbor if he was interested in selling it, and he said if I could get it running he would be happy to see it go. I got it running in October 2021 and drove it across the street to my ranch (slowly, carefully-no brakes!) and will return it to its former glory as time and $$ permit. Love this truck!

My truck served on a ranch in the Sierra River Nevada foothills. Here it is when it it still wore the ranch branding logo on the doors. I left it like that for a long time but I've since repainted the whole truck.

Nice save. You have a great truck! Have you thought about reproducing the brand, like maybe burn it into the bed wood? I think it is really cool we have a lot of cattle ranchers in my town and they all have their brands, it is a part of your trucks history! My truck came from my neighbor and I will definitely display his brand somewhere. His is JC Ranch and it will be easy because he has the actual branding irons!

That's a good idea. We have a vinyl sticker guy in town who could make me a little brand sticker for the underside of the toolbox lid. I have a collection going under there of stickers related to my travels and parts I've installed.
