Need help ID'ing transmission 7KCD153A
Hi Guys, brand new here so be gentle. I have a 1997 Z71 3 door that I bought used some time back. I'm pretty sure that neither the transmission or engine are original. The transmission bit the dust and I need a replacement. The transmission is still in the truck so I can't read the top ID tag but I can see what looks like a vendor rebuild tag. The case is stamped with 7KCD153A which should tell me what I need to know. I can't find a decode for this, anyone point me in the right direction? I need my truck back on the road. BTW, the reason I suspect the engine is not original is because the VIN specifies 5.7L, but the Oil Filter that is called for with thread size 18mm x 1.5 will not fit. Oil filter with thread size 13/16" -16 does fit. I haven't pursued that yet. Thanks!

Oil filters that attach vertically to the engine have English threads. The filters that attach to the 90 degree filter adapter have metric threads. All vortec 5.7 engines are interchangeable(from 96-02). I've removed oil coolers on some 4wd trucks and ditched the adapters and used a shorter filter for differential clearance.
You can have your current transmission rebuilt. If you are in a pinch you can get a used one from a 96 or early 97(if it has a removable torque converter cover). You can use a late 97 or 98 if your current truck has a 1 piece removable bell housing. The first 4 numbers indicate you have a 97 4l60e, so it may be original. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=550122 |
Re: Need help ID'ing transmission 7KCD153A
Thanks 95 S_Trucker, the oil filter info is interesting. Mine doesn't have a 90 degree adapter so the explains the oil filter discrepancy.
I had already looked at the transmission decode post that you linked me to. I knew that it was a '97 model 4l60 with a one piece case, its the "KC" part that I couldn't decode. From what I've read these characters represent what vehicle the transmission was installed in but I can't find any breakdown of this. I'm guessing maybe KC means K and C series chassis? There had got to be a list somewhere. |
