mustang fuel tanks in 55-59 trucks

I know that it is fairly common to use old mustang fuel tanks in the back of these trucks. I noticed that the 64-68 tanks are 16 gallon while the '69's are 18 gallons. Will the larger, '69 tank fit the same? i cant get sizes. Thanks, Nik

The main difference is the top of the tank. The Mustangs used the top of the tanks as the trunk floors. On the older cars the top of the tank is flush with the mounting flange. The new cars, the top of the tank stuck up about an inch or more above flange level.

I'm using the 20 gallon tank in mine, it is a bit taller on top, maybe 1.5" but since I put a notch in my frame I will have the space to sit the tank on the top of the frame, plus I wanted to reuse the LS1 internal fuel pump assembly.
The 16 gallon tank sit right on top and level with the frame rail of these trucks.

Look here, I have the tank inside the frame rails when the pictures were taken.

Thank you. I think that the 20 gallon, 1970 tank will sit to high. The '67-'68 tank is 16 gallons and i'm sure would work. Anyone use the 18 gallon '69 mustang tank?

The first picture makes it look like it will fit. Then further down there are pictures of a different tank, that has the mounting flange way further down on the tank. I was hoping for the flange to be flush with the top of the tank so it can mount on the top of the frame rails. any thoughts?

Do you no of any newer tanks that will fit with 10" deep, mustang tanks are hard to fine out here. I got a 1996 camaro tank but its not flat top and bottom.lp

Yeah, there are a bunch on ebay as well as a bunch of other vendors if you google it. They are pretty reasonable to ship too. Plus, they are brand new, you dont have to worry about you gas tank being clean.

I just happened to have a 65 mustang tank for 65 fastback, and I believe it has a straighter fill neck on it.. I think the others are angled more, so the 65 style will be easier to mount a nice fill cap through the bed..
and instead of mounting it to the top of the frame, I would build a frame out of square stock and bolt the tank to the bottom , so you can remove it if necessary.. I saw a pic somewhere, I'll look for it..

found it !!

skip99. I went to number of gas tank web sites and all have a 65 Mustang but no mention of a Mustang fastback. All of the pictures show the 65 Mustang tanks look a like with the same dimensions and capacities. One site even had a Ford part number of the original so one would have to find out if the fastbacks part number is different.
