Really nice guy that I'll return to visit very soon - he wants to meet my wife. Retired after 28 years in the Army, a West Point grad, final assignment was Panama Canal in 1976. Retired in NM so his wife could pursue a degree in archaeology here. Enjoyed daily swims in Panama so built an indoor pool that keeps at 90 degrees year round! He can't drive anymore. He was really thrilled to talk about the Chalet but I interrupted his lunch so didn't stay long. I happened upon the Chalet recently and dropped in today while on a drive in my 72 Blazer.

I assume he's not internet-savvy, but if he is or anyone in his family is, they are welcome to our free-to-join Chalet & Casa Grande owners/enthusiasts forum, at the link in my sig.

DeadheadNM, could I ask the favor of snagging the camper serial # and the build date from the plate by the back door? Photo below is of the plate from my former #1747. I wouldn't mind also seeing the Galles sticker / logo on the back, if they put one there. I am still adding to my mega-spreadsheet on all the ones still in existence, this is a new one on me. Ironic since I lived in Albuquerque from '87 to '94, and in the mountains east of Albq from '64 to '87. Never had the luck of seeing any Chalet around the whole state that I can remember.

After I left I kicked myself for not photographing the plate, which I did see affixed at the rear. I'll make a point to do so when I drop by next and hope to do so next weekend. He was a little saavy - made a point to mention he was aware of an example that sold for ~$20k.

I'll look for a Galles sticker. Galles never used a pot metal dealer badge, which is a real shame. I do have an example pic of the decal Galles used in 72 as well as a Galles license plate.

Re: Pretty decent looking 1977 Blazer Chalet-denver craigslist

Much appreciated on that effort. A little hard to tell, but it looks like that other black plastic oval (standard issue) RV plate isn't on the back. No loss about that, if it is missing. Could be I'm thinking of vinyl stickers that Ed Black's might have had instead of Galles. My dad bought his '86-ish regular pickup from those guys. More often that not, most Chalets & GMC Casa Grandes I run across have no dealer logos on the back, but some have the potmetal logos and others have vinyl ones.

On the $20k Chalet, that was Chalet #1385, an anomaly that might have over-inflated the classic dealer prices of one or two others. #1385 was on ebay and had multiple bidders up to the $10 grand point, but then just the remaining individual who took it on up to the reserve of $21,500. I saved the bidders history printout on that one. From what I've seen of others in really good shape (near showroom-new restorations), the high-end value of these tops out at around $12-$15 grand. I go into a bit more detail on that in the "Buying And Selling" section of the blazerchalet.com page here. (I'm the caretaker of that site, nearly all of the other content was put in there by its creators years ago)

Yep, ended with "reserve not met" at $12,400, perhaps $5 grand more than it is worth. But that's not the least of it, this is the second ebay listing of Chalet #0414, it's first one was here back in August. The guy who won the first auction joined our Chalet forum to tell us the news, and upon discovering its faults, got his money back. It was sold a second time a week or three later, with the new owner joining our forum who then returned it after learning of its engine issues and other problems (the interior is not "mint" in the least). Without getting into further details, the ebay seller faces problems with this one and how it is represented, from what I hear out of both 'temporary' former owners.

This is such valuable information and why it pays to be part of forums and groups. I have been very interested in this Chalet since the first listing. I felt uneasy about it from the beginning and it looked like something that could show better than actual. I'm glad I saw this and I think I will pass if two owners have been disappointed in the truck. For the right price it would be fun vehicle. I was always thinking 10k was my max, but it sounds like that may have even been too much.

Interesting. I thought it showed well in the pics and wouldn't have been too suspicious about it. Are those seats swapped in by a previous owner? It appears they were made to look correct but I don't think I've seen seats like that in a Chalet before.

As the saying goes, "knowledge is power, networking is priceless." The Chalet #0414 shined up so well, I didn't recognize it at first glance, and the text describing it as the 414th built didn't register, either. But the moment I dropped its VIN number into my mega-spreadsheet, I saw that I had noted in my 'Last seen' column that it was on Craigslist just a few months earlier, and from that I could see in my Craigslist history (including downloaded photos) for it, that it previously had different wheels, incorrectly reupholstered brown cloth seats, no front spare carrier, and a price of just $5500. It's two prior listings showed it much dirtier - see composite photo below. It also has what no other '76 Chalets have, a big swath of black paint across the front of the camper roof.

Yep, as seen in the '76 brochure for these, the interior had a passengerside closet and vinyl-covered dinette seats. The cab seats were also covered in the same vinyl material and were low-backs. 1977 Blazers had cloth orange-plaid cab seats, but the dinette seats were tan vinyl. So, some prior owner swapped in the tall-back van style cab seats, and the current ebay seller was just guessing on what would pass for original-looking seat material.

You might put a call out on the 67-72 pickup board to see if any one can help you. Lots more folks on that part of the forum. Good luck with the search for help and the wife.

Sort of. This Kent WA one is Chalet #1102, the same one that was the initial topic of this 2013 thread here. It may look ok, but as I noted in post #10 in that old thread, it looks like it's been de-roofed at some point, and these rigs aren't worth $5 grand when they have that big of a problem with them. But the one thing in favor of this rig is that the seller said he had an original Chinook blueprint for the camper unit. Try as I might, I've attempted to get guys to go over there to get copies of whatever he has, but the seller is not especially open to sharing what he has. And since the seller hasn't been able to sell it after all this time, that might be an indication that the rig has other major problems with it.
