I am new to this forum but have used other peoples threads as a resource and I decided it was time for me to contribute. So here is my project. Its a 67 swb with factory air. I have been working on it for a year and here is what I have done so far:Attachment 961095

so far i have installed a new crossmember and c notch kit, had the frame powder coated inferno orange, and installed new springs, front tubulat a arms, sway bar, front shock mounts, new energy suspention bushings, rear panhard bar. and fabricated a mount for a mustang 2 rack and pinion. used dodge cordoba tie rod ends as it was all i could find to match the 9/16 thread of the rack and i have a machine shop making me some adjusters. I built some brackets on the rear to mount my 85 cadillac calipers (orielly) and 96 caprice cop car rotors. coming next is fuel and brake lines and a new boyd efi tank i ordered last week. I am currently installing a set of no limit rear shock mounts.

I dont have every thing decided on yet, I do know I am going to run a 5.3 aluminum block with a stand alone engine mgmt and a 4l60. I have a new eaton limited slip unit to install and a set of 3.73:1 gears. The out side will be 2012 carmero inferno orange metallic and satin black from the upper body line up. Also a set of 05 chevy buckets with the headrest deleted and the fold up center console all wrapped in black leather. I already flushed the stake pockets and deleted the ashtray and re fabbed the dash to accept a dual din app radio. will have an onboard hard drive to store all media.

I did have a couple of questions if anyone has some answeres I would greatly apreciate them.
1. when I installed the front 2" drop springs from pol i has a very hard time indexing them correctly and i am still not certain they are right. to get the upper coil loop to fit on the guide in the spring pocket i had to index the spring away from the stop on the pol lower a arm and then when i applied force to the spring it kept jumping out.
2. i tryed to hand shocks front and back i have a total of 4.5" front and 5" rear drop but even stock front shocks wont mount in the rear. by the time i get enough load on the spring to hang them they want to bend my brackets. I have left them off for now untill i get close to complete i figured i would measure then and give my self an extra inch to extend and the rest to collapse. also anyone have some advise on shock rates? i want a firm responsive ride. thanks!

installed my boyd efi tank and a spin on filter this weekend, and got some of my 1/2" stainless feed line and 3/8" stainless return line bent and installed. will post some pics later.

I just used a legal size manilla envelope and made a pattern. I made it to fit the larger diameter of the backing plate flange ( round protrusion on the outside of the backing plate flange) and made a radius that would clear the caliper ( cradle for caliper to rest in) and I gave it a little extra clearance. Then i ran the legs of it way long and cut a piece of 3/8" ply wood to mimic the steel plate from the pattern I made. then I rested the caliper in the ply wood and taped some pieces of a carpenters pencil to the rotor to give me a 1/4" gap between the rotor edge and the caliper. then I was able to mark bolt holes and the final lenght for the bracket, it was here that I discovered i needed to space the caliper back twards the diff. about 5/16" so when I made the plate bracket i welded two 5/16" 20 nuts on the back side of the bracket. I think I still have the pattern I used I will look for it tonight and get some measurements off of it.

yes. I did use a freinds plasma machine to cut the plate out though. alot cleaner then a torch.

I dont think i am allowed to sell things on here. but i would think in the 200.00 range and some postage, the concern i would have with building you a set is this: my truck has the original 12 bolt housing and has 73 5on5 axles which are really 3/4" too wide for the housing if you were doing a drum brake. since I was doing a disc setup I dident care, the raceway for the bearing works just fine so it wassent an issue for me. that being said this same bracket set up with stock lenght axles would need a 1" thick nut welded to the back side instead of the 1/4" thick nut. so since everything else is the same i would say i can cut you out a pair, but would rather leave the nuts off and have you fit your backset correctly. but that would still leave you with some fabrication. I dont know if that would work for you. If enough people wanted them I could justify using a buddies plasma cnc table and maybee get the cost down to 150 a set or so. any how if i am not allowed to sell let me know, as its not my intention but you all have helped me and i dont mind helping back

I took some measurements last night, and the problem I see is that with a stock axle housing and stock lenght axles the rotor will sit too close to the bracket and there is not room for the inner brake pad. this could be resolved by making the bracket to fit on the inside of the backing plate flange. this way you could only utilize three of the bolts on the backing plate. I have seen brackets like these online. I cant find anyone who will sell only the brackets when honestly the rotors and calipers run about 180.00 at your local orielly or auto zone, they want 900.00 for the kit. so they seem to be charging about 700.00 fot the brackets which are all made out of 3/16" or 1/4" plate. This is rediculous. so I will try this weekend to come up with a set that will work for a stock config. c1069 is your rear axle a stock 69?

I have a buddy who runs a modified dirt car. We were at a frame shop getting some stuff and I found a set of caliper brackets for the small (s-10, El Camino and most GM cars) calipers. They were only like $35 a pair for weld on and $60 for bolt on. I would only use weld on myself. I think I saw them at Summit Racing or Jegs later on.

My brother runs a modified as well. I looked through all of his brackets before I built mine. none of the bolt ons work for theese trucks, the back spacing is the problem. The one that might work they sell at speedway and its a bolt on birdcage type that will bolt to any 3" axle tube. i dident like the bolt on idea either, maybee fine for a 2400lb race car on dirt but doesent seem kosher for a 4500lb truck on pavement. The weld ons would work great. the reason I dident go that route is because the gm 12 bolt has no wheel bearing race and when a wheel bearing goes its time for a new housiong. I made mine to bolt on so when this happens(if) I can transfer my brackets to a new housing. anyhow the price is right for weld ons at speedway motors, but keep in mind what they are designed for (a lightweight racecar) and they are only 3/16" plate. some advertize 1/4" plate but they are not they are a metric equivelant which is closer to 3/16". I probably over did it with 3/8" but it is the brakes, not somewhere i a m compfortable with skimping as I drive the hell out of my hot rods, no trailer queens here.

The other thing I neglected to state about the imca/usra type caliper brackets(for dirt modifieds) is they use a montecarlo,regal,s10,ect. front caliper which has no provision for an emergency brake. They can get away with it as they are not street legal and are not subject to d.o.t. standards.

I ran into another problem tonight when I went to put my wheels on. the fronts would not go on all the way. they fit when i first got them but someone had already converted the front to 5on5 using salvage yard parts. The western chassis drop spindles I used needed to have 73-87 hd rotors to work and it seems the hub is bigger then what I had before. I decided to use a grinder to chamfer the edge of the rotor hub back about 3/8" instead of mill my wheels out. (better to grind on a 35.00 rotor then a 300.00 wheel). did one side and wheel fits well now.

Yea mine were close to 1/4" but don't remember now. Yea they are for the standard front caliper for El Camino's and S-10 but I was told you could use Caddy (Deville I think) calipers that have the built in hydraulic e-brake. Anyways just an idea. I'm sure you will come up with something stronger and better.

I am not sure if the 79-85 seville,deville,ect calipers will work with the dirt track brackets. I will check out of curiosity though as that would be good to know. I only made mine out od 3/8" because I had to make them myself, and although 1/4" would be plenty strong enough the boly on kits make me nervous with how close to the edge of the plate the holes are. so i would definatly agree with you about using the weld ons. I might want to do that on my 70 c20 to convert that dana 60 to disc.

Ok here are the pics I promised. I got my tie rod adjuster sleves from the machine shop and I got them installed and the toe in set fairly close. I also installed my boyd's tank and a spin on filter and ran my stainless feed and return lines. I got tires mounted on my wheels and put my wheels on so now Im back to a roller againAttachment 965073
