1966 Chevy 4x4

Well i figured beings im getting ready to final build my 66 ive been driving to school for a year now i might as well start a thread. I bought a 1966 chevy 1/2 ton lwb with a 250 straight 6 and a 4spd for $400 last spring. When i first bought it it was only running on 2 cylinders i rebuilt the head and fixed all the wiring to get the lights and signals to work and havent done much since then. This past summer i ran onto a great deal on rockers cab supports and fenders and i bought it all. So now i have everything to fix it but then i ran onto a 1977 shortbed 4x4 for $300 and so im going to part the body out. Ill keep the frame and axles it has 3.08 gears which helps because i am considering putting a cummins under the hood. Im hoping the body swap shouldnt be too hard but the end result should be a sweet truck and i love being different. I am the only one at school that drives anything older than 1975 and i love it.

You'll have to do a bit of fab work to put that '66 body on that '77 frame BTDT. IMO it would be easier to use your '66 frame and just adapt or build spring mounts utilizing everything from the '77 except the frame.

Either way you go there will be help available here, just ask.

Putting a Cummins under the hood.... Sweet! My only concern would be the strength of the frame and axles. If you are looking at doing any pulling with it, maybe upgrade to a 3/4 ton frame and axles. Just a thought.

Re: 1966 Chevy 4x4

ya i considered doing that but from everybody ive talked to its gonna be easier to build body mounts on the 77 frame for the 66 cab then put the 4x4 under my frame and im not putting the 6bt thats found in the dodge trucks im putting a 4bt in it so it should be fine

Re: 1966 Chevy 4x4

yes its a 1974 3/4 ton, fo' by fo' shortened 17" from long bed version, although now that i've got the burb body on newer chassis, i wish i had only shortened it 15-16" due to the fact that it seems, to me anyway, that when these 60-66 trucks are 4x4's the front axle just looks like its a bit back towards firewall to me.
i'm going to run this as with "stock" style leaf front and rear, but eventually i'm going to 4 link, coil over front and rear, still 4x4, prerunner truck it.
mainly cuase i'm a desert guy, so haulin azz through woops in an old sub is gonna be fun and cool! also i'lll be able to pull out a coil spring (theres two stacked springs per corner on the shocks i'm gonna run), which will slam it in the weeds to go low and slow on cruise night if i feel the need.

Well today was somewhat productive but it wasnt great. i blew a tire out on the 66 on the way home from school luckily i had a spare at home and got the truck home i pulled the doors off and started to get the front clip off i hopefully can pull the front clip off tomorrow and then sell it and the doors and the hood. but i really need to work on our 2001 ford f350 diesel that we are trying to get running and once i get it running ill start driving it to school and start really tearing in to this build but baseball starts soon so im only gonna get to work on it on the weekends
