1965 C-10 - Sleeping Beauty

My dad (Chevy_man5) and I went to look at a truck yesterday. She ended up coming home with us.

It's a 1965 C-10 LWB. Not sure yet if it is a 230 or a 250. Granny 4 speed transmission.

The P.O. said that they were driving it two weeks ago, but we had a hard time getting it started. It was way out of time. Finally after messing with it for a while, we got it started.

We made it 33 of the 52 miles home, before it started overheating. Hooked a tow strap on it and drug it home, in the dark. No heat made a cold ride home!

This morning we took a bunch of pictures, and got it parked properly on the street, so we don't get a ticket.

My dad will post some pictures later.

Welcome to the forum. It will be nice to see the pics.

As I'm always the pessimist, I hope it's not a blown head gasket or cracked block. That would cause both the running issue, and the overheating issue, and would be much more likely if you look in the radiator and see that it has just water in it.

Usually overheating issues are caused by a leak or stuck closed thermostat. My mind runs to the worst because of the multiple problems, and usually when one point of failure can cause all the noticed problems, that seems to be what it is normally.

Welcome,

Hope your motors OK. Inlines are cheap to buy if not.

We filled the radiator, and fired it back up again this morning. Drove back down the street and back.

I think it is timing problems still, as well as needing a carb rebuild badly.

Here are the pictures.

The oil is black and dirty, no foam or "chocolate milk" LOL and the antifreeze was still nice and green. We had no heat in the cab either, so my first thought is the thermostat. We will play with it some more soon, and start figuring it all out.

Well, my fears are at ease. No heat in the cab isn't caused by the thermostat though. Water circulates through the heater core even with the thermostat closed. That means you may have a water valve not open, a bad water pump, a blockage in the heater core, or the water level started out so low that by the time it heated up any, all your coolant had simply become steam, which doesn't tend to pump through heater cores very well.

Congrats on the new ride.:metal: Have you checked yet for all the cool stuff like :is the build sheet under the seat? What was it's original color? If the engine is original it would be the 230.

Re: 1965 C-10 - Sleeping Beauty

PoDuck, the blower motor isn't working, and between the holes in the floor, and no seals on the floor vents, it may have been warm, but we were not able to feel it. LOL

Spud 63 it does have the build sheet behind the seat. It is the original white. I found a story online that said the 250 had a dual groove pully on the crank and the 230 only had a single. I havent had time to find more info about it.

sweet man cant wait to see that baby all cleaned up looks like the fenders rockers and cab corners are in pretty nice shape and as for the motor my 230 has a org double pully but if you look in the truck under the dash driver side over by the vent it will have the tag telling you the motor and the hp at a set rpm for the turck.

also if that carb gives your trouble past one rebuild throw it in the trash and get a 2bbl i messed with my org one bbl rodsucker forever before deciding it was just worn out.

Nice score. I hoped you would find a truck that suited you..
Now get to work on it:chevy:
I am betting the heater core may be plugged up
are you keeping the 230???

I agree

Welcome to the forum :D

Congrats on the new truck. Without the blower motor working, you won't feel any heat in the cab. If you put your hands on both heater hoses and if they are both warm, you will have coolant running thru the heater core.

Thanks Kro. Debating on a rebuild, or replacement. There is the typical rust. Holes in the floor both passenger and drivers. The fender holes and the door holes have been filled with fiberglass, so not sure if we should leave it for now, or pull it to prevent further damage. I was looking at that tag, but not in detail. I'll have to look again.

Thanks Captain. We will have to let it warm up again and check that.

Pirate, after the cold ride home, he was so jazzed, he was out in the dark and cold working on trying to fix the tail light. LOL I was totally surprised that the next morning I didn't find him bundled up in some blankets sleeping in the cab.

Is that power steering i see? and as for rebuild, or replacement depending on the cash flow with a little tune up that motors ready for some more miles my inline is pushing 30 more k to the org 110k it had after a few hundred dollar tune up.

Also whats your plan or vision on her Brennin stock lowered, paint scheme?

Re: 1965 C-10 - Sleeping Beauty

I don't want to lower it I also want to keep the bed original and keep it white with black pinstripes.

Cool Truck.... Reminds me of my high school truck - a '52 Willys 4WD pulled from a farmers field. This was 1976 or so, so it was much newer than yours at the time.

Looking forward to hearing your progress.
