Junkman3's C3500

We might have talked about Dan's 1t pickup he built some time ago, but due to both of our lack in picture technology it has never been shown till right now. He is just finishing up a refresh on it and it saw it's first show last weekend. I'll let him do the talking on his truck, but here is the one picture he emailed today...with help from a friend

Attachment 1780665

If anyone knows how to convert from PDF, I have more pictures from a magazine article in an e-mail he sent me a couple years ago I could forward. This truck is neat! I saw it years ago at our local ATHS chapter show...that is happening this weekend for 2018!

Re: Junkman3's C3500

My chance to brag.........Thanks to Tim . 70 GMC C-30 with 9' stepside bed. Bought from DD distributer I worked for in Cleveland for $405.00 back in late '70s. Originally had 292 six cyl, 4 speed , no power steering or power brakes.
Dad ued as a farm truck for several years, then I prepped it for Detroit Diesel conversion. Removed A-frame front suspension, took springs and hangers and steering gear from a Blazer I parted out, bought a 4 by 4 front axle from a core buyer, had front axle modified to remove differential and ended up with tubular front axle . Installed used 4-53N, along with 3152 Spicer short 4th trans, along with 13" clutch that I took out of a '64 Chev model C-60.Students at Ohio Diesel Tech got it running for me, and changed injectors to max normal N-50s. I also installed a 5831 Spicer aux with .74 overdrive and left original GM diff with 4.10 gears. Ist put on road as a diesel in Sept. 1984 and put an additional 150K miles on that engine, til 1995. I found a 4-53T basket case engine, which I overhauled and updated to Silver Spec ............More tomorrow

Great looking truck and love that Detroit. We've been waiting for pictures for a long time now, lol.

I see where you first put in on the road in '84. Reminds me of a story I might have told a time or two before. It was around 1978 and I heard a Detroit approaching. Only, I couldn't find the 2-Ton truck. I kept saying "where is that Detroit sound coming from"??

Then just about when it was passing by, I saw that it was in a later model GMC pick-up owned by a local trucking company.

That inspired me even more to put a 3-53 or 4-53 in my '64 C-30, but that never happened, lol.

Re: Junkman3's C3500

I have an old hood up engine compartment shot from when Dan had it in Maryland at Grimes Truck Center/ATHS Mason-Dixon chapter show... always first weekend in May... now at Gladhill Tractor Mart (JD) in Faegaville, MD off US340 just west of Frederick and before Jefferson. I believe they give it a Jefferson address. It's combined with a Sat/Sun antique tractor show and pull. Truck show is Sunday.

More pictures would be great, and we'll see what we can do with what I have and about getting current ones. But... what we just have to have is a video! I'm sure all will agree.

Re: Junkman3's C3500

Maiden voyage with the turbo engine was to the Greensboro show in 1996 and since put 10 to 15 K added per year going to shows, sometimes solo, and sometimes pulling a 29' Holiday Rambler trailer. In 2000, after the Valley Forge show we headed to the west coast with the trailer, visiting relatives and museums in Salt Lake City, Wendover, Sacremento, then worked our way up the coast to Aberdeen Washington, where our youngest daughter lived at that time. Found an engine show 50 miles away, so drove there, unhooked the trailer and did a dog and pony show there. Logging country, and saw my 1st twin engine chainsaw there. Continued up into BC, Canada to the Calgary area, where I hooked up with Gord Cooper......trucker and drag racer with "Smokin' Gun" Detroit Powered KW. He and wife took us to the Calgary Stampede. Back to the States in Montana , then worked our way back east putting a total of 9000 miles in 7 weeks. One Flat tire on truck in Portland, plus 3 flats on the trailer, that had original bias tires, so no damage there. Fuel average, grossing just under 14,000 lbs was 13.5 and oil consumption was about 500 Miles per quart . Mileage solo has been 18-20 MPG for the truck weighing just over 7000 lbs .
In 2010, I bought a 69 era cab and started the changeover in 2011, when hip and back issues hit . More later .

Very nice! So much better than a Cummins 4BT swap.

Re: Junkman3's C3500

Dan, will you be taking this truck to Lexington? If so, I'll ask Dick or Mel to get pictures to send back to me. Meanwhile, where are the computer savvy types that can take a PDF I e-mail to them and convert (or whatever you do) or simple copy for posting here? I have a magazine article from back when Dan did the above mentioned travel trailer trip, and others of him hauling a flatbed (5th whl?) chock full of somethng or the other. Haven't gone back to look yet. What... Me remember? Funny

Re: Junkman3's C3500

I typed a decent continuation of the current ongoing restoration two days ago but must have hit the wrong button 'cause it disappeared. Today it went to it's second show in 7 years, about 125 miles each way. It is good enough to get to a show and home with temporary exhaust, no air cleaner, no dash instruments, except the SW mechanical ones I installed under dash . Daughter took some pics this evening, perhaps she'll help me attach some.

I had responded to Special K directly, that probably will not drive it to Lexington........................until I get AC working with a lot of assembly left to complete .

Nice truck! Love what you've done with it! Looks like you need a pair of side steps for the 9 footer. Contact me if interested. I don't get on here but every week or two, so give me time to respond.

Re: Junkman3's C3500

Bog-------Thanks for the offer........but I do have the steps for an 8' bed all painted up and ready to go on after tons of other things first . My steps for the 9' bed got ratty from leaves rotting in them, so I had acquired a set of new take off for an 8 footer. It makes it look like the proper space to run a stack up behind the cab . I want the exhaust to exit the right rear as it used to do .

We need a video of the Diesel running!!!

Re: Junkman3's C3500

Tom-------Like my wife says: Seen one , seen 'em all, or heard one.........heard 'em all .

But I might have a sound bite from daughter Sue a month or so ago .

Probably put 150 more miles on it today, as I took it to a car show in Kidron, Ohio at Lehman's Hardware ..........a store that caters to the biggest Amish population in the world. , the went to Wooster to attend the Eastern States John Deere Expo, then back to Orrville for a tractor pull, then home at 9 PM.

I'm getting reacquainted with the 2 stick setup, but the 3152 Spicer main trans jumps out of 2nd gear. If I'd have remembered that symptom, I should have fixed it over the 7 years it's been out of service.

Amazing Job!

Kudo's to you Dan.

I have wanted a diesel truck for years and could only dream about repowering my '70 with a Detroit Diesel.

If you ever travel to the Long Island NY area, let me know and I'll get you to a cruise night show any day of the week.

Bill

Hearing is one thing. Hearing and seeing it from a '70 GMC C3500 is another thing. I'd volunteer if I could cross paths with you in it. What are you doing the weekend of the Tri-State Show in Winchester, VA Sept?

I'm glad to see you enjoying it this summer. Shame about it popping out of 2nd. Does it do it under power or when you let off?

Re: Junkman3's C3500

Bill------We'll see what happens later in the year with more assembly time. I'd like to get back to the Ballston Spa./ Hudson Mohawk chapter show in late September.
