Is it my tune??

Hi All,
I have a weird problem (or maybe it is normal IDK)with my setup. 2011 truck 5.3 with original 6L80. When I mash the gas it will peel out 1-2 gears but once it hits 3rd it feels like the engine is stalled out (loss of power) and then will kick down and take off again.

I compare this to my Nissan Armada, when traction control kicks in, the Armada pedal has no response to input. It feels like the engine and trans stall or shut down until the wheels quit slipping and then it will take off.

Is this normal or do you think maybe the traction control fro 3rd gear is still on (if possible)?

I don't do this but every once in a while when I get a wild hair and there is no one around, but it still bugs the crap out of me as I don't think this should be happening.

Thanks for any help,

Ben

Could be a lot of things, including an issue with the transmission. Can you send me a copy of your tune?

Re: Is it my tune??

Hi Rob, thanks for replying. No, I don't have a copy of my tune, wish I did. I will have to take it back in and get it checked out by a new tuner as the previous one who did the initial tune was a jack wagon!

I have thought about buying HP tuners since I have to spend another $400, but don't want to mess anything up and have no idea what anything is.

It would probably be worth your money....

Re: Is it my tune??

If I buy, should I get the standard or professional? I have read the interface differences, but not sure if I need the pro stuff, what is your opinion Rob?

Re: Is it my tune??

I would go professional, I went standard and wish I would have went pro. The main reason being with the pro you can data log without having a laptop running the program.

The key benefit to this is you cant have a laptop hooked to the hp tuner box, and to a power inverter at the same time, it can burn out the hp tuner box. If you have a nice laptop or windows based tablet this likely isnt an issue, but it seems like most laptop batteries are junk after a couple years, leading to minimal data logging.

Thanks for responding sprint, looks like I will be purchasing the pro.

Gunna need some help Rob!! lol

Re: Is it my tune??

Your issue sounds potentially like Torque management, depending how its configured on your tune.

TM will act like a busted-ass traction control, that comes on at seemingly random and usually inopportune times.

No problem. The first thing I would do would be to put everything in the transmission tune back to stock and just update your gear and tire size.

Agree a 100% Brew. I just fixed a friend of mines tune where nearly all of the torque management was turned off. It was banging 1-2 hard enough to break your teeth and 2-3 was super sloppy. I put everything back to stock and the truck shifts perfect now. Sometimes less is more....

Alright, HP in ordered. Will let you know when in. Thanks for all the help guys!

Torque management not being completely disabled was my problem for a while.

Re: Is it my tune??

FYI for everyone discussing TM. Its worth knowing that TM functions by pulling timing. The reason that it feels like TM affects other systems is that effectively, its the rest of the vehicle responding to what TM is doing. TM in GenIII's ends up working (and feeling) like an outside source rather than a cohesive part of the ECM system.

Bad things can happen when your pulling decently hard, TM gets activated and pulls timing, then deactivates and lets the timing back in. When this happens at the top of a shift, you can smoke a trans.

Well....I got my HP tuners in, but can't figure out how to load it onto my surface pro 4. I have a buddy that is going to let me use his laptop tomorrow, so hopefully it can play nice with HP tuners.

I will keep all posted.

I have on a surface pro with no problem. You should be able to download the software from their website.

Re: Is it my tune??

Well, apparently Windows 10 does everything automatically and I didn't have to follow the vague instructions the tuner came with.

Had my IT guy look at it and he figured it out lol. So tonight when I get home I will scan my engine and let you know!

Re: Is it my tune??

Looks like your tuner disabled most of the TM. What gear are you running?

Hi Rob, running 3.42 years and 28" tires. I saw he got that correct. I will have to data log tomorrow and see what it records. I also noticed there were a bunch codes that are being thrown.....

What codes?

I am wondering if these are just saved codes from when it was tuned? I can't emigine the engine being able to run with all of the codes.

Has your check engine light been on?

Re: Is it my tune??

I am running my air temp, engine temp, speed, and RPMs off of a ScanGuage II, the only code that keeps popping up on that is B2AA or something like that, I would have to look again at it. It does not read or find all the ones in the HP tuner scan. I will take to truck out later today and do a live scan and see what I can come up with, too many kids in too many sports... lol

Is there anyway to load a live log on here?
