Apparently production numbers for 60-66 GM trucks don’t exist, leaving the breakdown by body style a mystery. But based on memory from when these models were new, I would speculate (arguably) 75% of pickups were fleetsides and 25% were stepsides. Where I grew up young people didn’t buy trucks, they bought new Chevelles and Pontiacs, or older Chevy passenger cars. Old people wanting a new truck bought long bed fleetside trucks because they were practical, and so did fleet owners. They hauled more stuff and could easily carry a camper or shell. So compared to stepsides (at least in my memory) the fleetsides always had a substantial numerical advantage.

When these trucks became “used cars”, short stepsides were almost always preferred by the younger crowd. Just like 55-57 Chevy 2 door sedans and hardtops, they got used up by kids beating them senseless. After a decade or more of this, many were gone leaving available more of the undesirable old people models to pick from.

I don’t have the enthusiasm to do an actual count, but looking through all 197 pages of the 60-66 picture thread I’d suggest there is a much higher percentage of stepsides represented on this forum than I’ve ever experienced looking at old trucks in real life.
